So far as a result of last winter all 3 of my windmills have had rot and spear pull. I have trunk cut all 3 and here are the current results. Smallest which was trunk cut several weeks back has grown 1 frond and has 2 fronds "waiting on deck" for you baseball fans. The middle one was trunk cut about 2 days ago and is starting to push up a spear. The 3rd and largest with what was 18" of trunk (now about 14") still shows no sign of growth. If no growth by this weekend, I'll keep cutting. It has live tissue but must have experienced some serious rot. I have never had windmills with spear pull take this long to exhibit any kind of growth so the last one may be a goner. A second thing to keep in mind is that these are all very small sized palms so trunk cut at your own risk.

p.s. lesson of the day: protect your palms for the first year or two (at least) even if you think they can handle what winter throws at them.
