Thanks for going through the trouble of posting it and thanks to JohnB. for the response. I had the pleasure of meeting him last weekend and what a great guy he is...
Anyway, here is the info on it:

This is a huge specimen of Lagerstroemia faurei, and I believe one of the first seedlings to be planted in the USA. This is the species that went into many of the modern crape myrtle hybrids, especially the ones from the U.S. National Arboretum here in Washington, DC (many of which have attractive bark, inherited from this parent). Older crape myrtle hybrids are pure L. indica.
