This is the 1st winter planted outside. About a 3+ foot trunk with about an 8 foot high canopy. I didn't want to over protect it. I placed a bottomless barrel over it to keep the rain & wind off the trunk. Above that, the tracky only had a blue plastic tarp around it to keep the rain out, with a large plastic trash sack over the top part. I wraped a terry towell around the spear, but wasn't here to change it when it collected moisture, but moisture still got in the spear and froze. It and the newest leaf were brown, and all the larger leaves that were in contact with the tarp were brown too. The parts that weren't touching the tarp are still green.
Well, the spear didn't pull, and has grown about 6 inches now. Another year or 2 and it's on it's own.
