I've never seen cotton grown outside of z7b and more than that I've never really seen it anywhere other than the Delta area. I know the Carolinas probably grow it well but all I've ever known is what's here. Outside of SW TN, West MS, and LA, I just haven't ever run across much in my travels. And what I've seen of cotton's nature is that it thrives in the hellish hot and humid summers we have here. The worse it gets, the better the cotton looks. When other plants like corn (which should never be planted here..) are dying from drought, cotton surges.
I would say that if I were to wake up on the side of a road beside a cotton field with no idea where I was, I could tell you a few things... It does not usually falls below 5F, it rains more than 50 inches a year, and I'm within 500 miles of the coast. Since cotton has to be planted each year, it doesn't have to overwinter, but it still requires the long, very hot summer of a sub-tropical climate to mature. So I think it's a fair indicator.
