I have found out the importance of that. I allowed even warm rains to settle in. I will NOT allow this again. Not even for warm days. That was my mistake. I had good ideas and understanding, but overthought this due to lack of experience.
I do have news to report. One of the original frond stems has moved and pushed up about an inch and something is green down in the middle it looks like (all there was before was a hole). I am wondering if it's trying to make a last attempt at survival??
