Ford muscle did a nice article on gutting the OEM support. If it were me I'd swiss cheese the OEM support, bolt the bumper back to it, lose the rubber bumper insulators (the 30 lb brackets) and fab up some brackets from angle iron or angle aluminum.

I shed the factory AC in my cougar and went with a factory NON A/C setup, and saved 85 lbs.. and still kept my defrosters.
