Tom. Do not know if you ever replaced valve stem seals before, but if not, I have a way to do without fear of dropping the valve. Most people say compressed air in the cylinder, which does work, unless you loose air or something else happens. I like to do it differently. First, rotate the piston to the bottom of the compression stroke, then feed a cloth clothesline into the cylinder, I usually put about 1-2 feet in there, then rotate the piston up untill it stops. The clothes line is now smashed at the top of the combustion chamber holding the valves up. No chance of them falling. Go get a beer, go on vacation, whatever, they will still be there. When done with those valves, rotate it down and remove the rope. May be a bit archaic, but works great.
