1978 XR-7. A sharp car. White walls & chrome spoke hub caps. Lipstick Red (paint code: 2UYW). Kept in garage. Looks just like EJ's "LIPSTICK: 1977 XR-7". A couple years ago the stock 134hp 302 slipped a timing chain and bent some valves. Rebuilt origional 302 block and upgraded: .040" overbore, Keith Black 10:1 pistons with Teflon coating, 351W cam (changes firing order to that of a 351W) & 351W heads (2.02"/1.60" valves & with 5-angle valve job), Edelbrock 600cfm 4bbl (#1406) and intake (Performer 289), Hedman hedders & Thrush turbo mufflers, K&N top-mount air filter, Accel 42000 volt Super Stock Coil, 3-speed C-4 auto transmission with shift kit, swapped out 9" 2.75:1 third member for a Richmond 3.55:1 one. Runs 3000 RPM at 70 MPH. I use 91-92 octane pump gas with 104+ Octane Boost. No air pump, cat converters, or EGR. A mild lope at idle. Car appears to be a sleeper until I start it. Never have put it on a dyno. The car smokes the tires in 1st gear, gives a good scratch (or long chirp) in 2nd, and a good hard solid shift into 3rd. Engine is very cold blooded, must be at full temp to drive. Engine is powerful but has a stumble at 1/2 to full throttle when under 3000 RPM. Other then that it runs great from idle to 1/2 throttle or when above 3000 RPM. Spark plugs show its running slightly rich. When idling it does smell a little like unburnt gas. I tried changing out rods, jets, and springs in carb but still cant get the kinks out of it. I installed a fuel pressure regulator and tried different settings and it still does it. Maybe get a high stall touque converter to keep it from boging down? Any other ideas?
