Posted by Bob on September 5, 2006, 11:32 am, in reply to "Memorial Tree" Most popular roadside viewpoints have been laid out to a landscaping scheme, so managers will be uneasy about allowing the planting of single 'private' trees. They might be highly sympathetic to an individual case, but they may foresee further requests which would then be hard to refuse. The Queen's View is in Forestry Commission ownership; you could approach the local office, which is at - However, organisations like Trees for Life (http://www.treesforlife.org.uk/helping/pat_life.html) and the Woodland Trust (http://www.woodland-trust.org.uk/plantatree/index.htm) run dedication schemes, where you make a donation which goes to planting one or more trees as a memorial. As I understand it, in those schemes you're contributing to a collective dedicated woodland, rather than having a single identifiable memorial tree. If you find a special site you could always approach a private landowner for permission to plant a dedicated tree. I have seen individual memorial trees in one or two places like that. But ideally you need somewhere that's fenced, to ensure that your tree survives the attention of sheep and deer. I hope you find a solution that satisfies your wish for a suitable memorial.

Unfortunately, given the sad circumstances, it may not be easy to achieve entirely what you'd like, especially if you want a specific memorial. There seems to be a general reluctance to allow the planting of single dedicated memorial trees with a plaque or other commemorative material. This is probably partly because it runs the risk of generating a rash of potentially unsightly and inappropriate memorials, rather as has happened recently in some mountain areas and led MCS to suggest alternative forms and places for commemoration.
