Posted by GOP LEE on 10/10/2007, 5:08 pm Tulsa County residents voted against proposed improvements to the Arkansas River Tuesday. With 100 percent of precincts reporting, Tulsa County has voted against the 4/10ths of a cent sales tax for development to the Arkansas River corridor. The vote was defeated 52 percent to 48 percent. The failed tax would have funded $282 million in river improvements. The private sector donated $117 million to the project. The nearly $400 million project would have paid for more low water dams and pedestrian bridges, as well as open the door for commercial development along the river. A solid turnout of 127,766 Tulsa County residents cast their ballots in Tuesday’s vote. “I believe this vote was a true testament of a grassroots organization defeating the big spenders,” said state Sen. Randy Brogdon, R-Owasso, who was against the tax. “The people spoke tonight and made it very clear that they were very tired of elected officials taking their money. It’s a great win for the people and a great win for taxpayers.” The tax, which would have gone into effect in January, would’ve been collected for seven years and paid for low-water dams, land acquisition, pedestrian bridges and habitat improvements along 42 miles of the river from Keystone Dam to the city of Jenks. It would’ve cost the average family making $50,000 a year between $4-7 a month, and senior citizens and lower-income residents could be eligible for annual rebates.
