Posted by Carol BANKSTON TO BE REMEMBERED AT MASTERS CLASSIC The fastest qualifier at the 2002 Masters Classic sprint car event at Knoxville Raceway will be honored with an award named in honor of popular Texas racer John Bankston, who was killed in a racing accident this past summer. The Masters Classic is presented by the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame and Museum and is open only to drivers age 50 and older. Bankston posted the quickest qualifying time at the Masters Classic for the past three years. Beginning with the May event, the fast qualifier will be presented with the "John Bankston Memorial Quick Qualifier Award". In making the announcement, Hall of Fame director Tom Schmeh said, "John loved competing in the Masters event and he dearly wanted to win it, and we loved hosting him in Knoxville. He truly was one of the classiest and nicest sprint car drivers that I've ever had the pleasure to meet, and he was a heck of a racer." The 2002 event is set for May 31, and is part of the Hall of Fame's induction weekend.
