I belive it was called the Pelican 200. It was at the Louisiana State Fairgrounds in Shreveport. The show was the last of the Pelicans. The track was soon torn down and made a parking area.
The race was controversial. I believe the year was around 78 but I cannot remember for sure. With so many cars lapping one another and judges not doing a swell job, the winner was finally designated as Ronnie Adams.
Well, I was a bit of a nutt...obsessed with cars, mumbers, laps...like baseball kids are with stats and such.
John won! I will forever know this. The claim was that he pitted before the judges stand and came out past the stand...thus not being counted. Well, that did not matter. I know...I was a countin'!!!
Adams did put on a great show of speed and talent (after a poor showing early in the race-having many problems) but John in that winged full body..an amazing car..(my pics of it were stolen! wish i had one..i loved that cars looks) won the race! He was steady and fast through out the long race that was mixed with asphalt and dirt cars(John's was dirt).
I'll never foget the skill John had when he visited Boothill through the years. His cars were always soooo good lookin' too! They really stood out.
He's missed!
Buddy
