Alone, Madelyne sat within the ruins of what had once been her secret lair. Just as fast as she’d built it, her Sisterhood cad crumbled. She admitted, her plans had been selfish, but they should have been doable. The plans was simple enough, resurrect a body capable of housing her energies. Thus far, only one body, other than her own, had been proven capable; that of Jean Grey. Unfortunately, inner turmoil began to break the team apart before outside forces did. The Wyngarde sisters could not stop bickering, which prompted a couple of the other ladies to jump in. With instability like that, it made them easy pickings for anyone else opposing them.
And, of course, there were the X-Men. Always, they served to be the thorn forcing its way through her skin. Just the thought of them forced her lips into an angry scowl. How she despised their leader, Scott Summers. While it was true that she had deeply loved him at one time, it was nothing but a distant memory. The mutant man had gone against the vows they had sworn to one another, he’d cheated on her. Not only that, but he’d lost their baby after she’d slipped into a coma after giving birth. That, well that was something she could never forgive him for. To add insult to injury, the friends she’d thought she had turned their backs on her. Madelyne had once been well received amongst the X-Men, but when it came out that she had been a mere copy of one of their beloved friends, they left her. She had been discarded from their lives like last week’s trash. That period in her life had been the toughest she’d ever endured, and she hoped she would never suffer anything remotely close to that ever again.
Breaking the silence, the sound of electricity crackling in the background caught her attention. It had been just some broken machines that had yet to be turned off from the battle that raged in here hours before. Nothing had been accomplished, and this body was beginning to break down. Due to excessive power use, her skin had started to dry out, wrinkle up. She felt noticeably weaker, unsure just how much more energy she had left in her. Letting out a deep breath, she leaned back in the chair she’d been resting on. At this time, she had nothing. Maddie had no-one to do her bidding, was pretty sure she did not have enough reserve in this body to do her own bidding, and worst of all, no plan. At the very least, not yet.
Suddenly, the sound of heels clicking against the floor greeted her ears. The former Red Queen looked up to see a woman decked out in black smile a devious smile. “Darling, this is all quite pitiful. You need to stop feeling sorry for yourself and get back on your feet, the woman with ebony tresses spoke, her voice as smooth as honey.
“I don’t know who you are, or what you want, nor do I really care, but you will not find it here,” the psionic replied, anger bubbling up inside of her. Who is this woman? And how dare she address me in such a manner? she mentally questioned, though was too physically drained to act out.
“I am here on business,” the mysterious woman answered, “I came in search of you, actually. I know of the events which have transpired here, and it really is a shame. But you, Madelyne, you have potential.”
“Who the hell are you, and what do you want?” Madelyne demanded, standing up. She could feel her bones tremble, not because she was scared, but because she was taxed of the energy she needed to function properly.
“I am the Black Queen of Hellfire, and I’ve come to offer you a position within my court, I was thinking something along the lines of a Rook.”
“I’m not interested, now leave me.”
“Love, I hardly think you’re in a position to deny me. Now, I’m aware that you’d like two things, goals which I can help you accomplish. Firstly, there’s the situation of a body,” the woman recited a few words in an ancient language as a wave of energy washed over Maddie. Her current body patched itself up, her skin tightening, her curves firming up,
and her stamina returning to its former glory.
“This is only a temporary fix, of course, I am aware you require another vessel entirely, and I intend to get it for you. As for the other thing, I can help you exact revenge on the X-Men, but I ask your services in return.”
Evaluating herself, pleased with her renewed vigor, the green eyed woman answered, “And as this Rook, what would you require of me?” Maddie inquired.
