“No,” Nathan’s voice calls out breaking the silence. Surge, or whoever is passing themselves off as Nori, stands over the barely conscious form of Cap with her gauntleted hand charged and aimed at him. Nathan takes aim and fires before the gauntlet can discharge. The teen is thrown violently through the air as the shot strikes the gauntlet. She lands ten feet away and doesn’t move.
“Cap,” Cassie says, shrinking back down to normal as she arrives on the scene. She kneels beside the fallen Avenger, tears rolling down her cheeks. The rest of the Young Avengers quickly arrive led by Hulkling. “Somebody tell them to get a medic here quick.”
“Were is she,” Cap asks as his eyes open with great protest. Despite the admonishment of the gathered, Steve starts to sit up. He looks around to See Nathan standing with his back to everyone over the unmoving form of Nori. With a hand up from Eli, a shaky Cap leads the rest over to were Iron Lad stands.
Noriko Ashida lay flat on her back, burns covering most of her exposed flesh. Here eyes stare up at nothing at all and her breathing comes in violent ragged gasps. Even as they reach her, her body is wracked by a massive spasm that stops a suddenly as it starts and she breathes no more.
“SHIELD containment unit we need a medic here stat,” Steve screams into his com link. He drops to his knees and immediately begins chest compressions. The teenagers stand in shock unsure of what to do as they look on. Iron Lad removes his helmet and begins to cry.
“No she can’t be…I barely put anything into the blast…”
“What happened,” Kate asks, her voiced choked by tears.
“She had Cap down and was going to…I didn’t…”
Teddy grabs Nathan in a crushing hug as he begins to break down. The others crowd in to console the hysterical Iron Lad as cap continues to attempt CPR. The whir of helicopters can be heard overhead, as SHIELD agents arrive on scene. Three of them brake away and head towards Cap carrying first aid gear.
“Over here,” Cap calls, standing up. “Bring the portable defibulator and get me two shots of adrenaline.” He turns back to the prone form that lay on the ground, now the charred body of a skrull…
Later
“I don’t even know were to begin,” Tony says as he lands. He walks into the command tent were Steve is drinking a bottled water and giving a statement to one of the senior officers on hand. SHIELD had taken control of the situation under control in a matter of minutes, tasking the local authorities with keeping the press and other onlookers at bay. Meanwhile, SHIELD units had begun sanitizing the incident.
“Looks like Fury might not be the complete nut job you’ve been claiming.”
“I know, now the question is what to do with that realization. How is the kid doing?”
“He is not taking it well at all, as to be expected. His energy burst hit the gauntlet and caused all of the built up power to rebound.”
“Sir,” an approaching SHIELD agent says holding out a zip drive. “This is everything we’ve got so far, the body is ready for transport as soon as you give the go ahead.”
“I want it in the air now and I want the autopsy results by the time I get back from Washington.”
“What is going on in DC?”
“I have to go before a house committee, hopefully these captures will keep them from unfunding SHIELD.”
“Good luck. If your men are done questioning them, I’d like to get the kids back home.”
“I think we’ve got all the statements we need. I have a security detail make sure you guys make a covert exit so you don’t get hounded by the press. I’ll also have a detail working to keep things as normal as possible at the mansion.”
“Thanks Tony. What do we do now?”
“To tell you the truth, I have no idea….”
