Following Day, New York City
“We’re only going to get one shot at them with the element of surprise so make it a good one,” Cap says over the com links. Since returning from the trip, Cap and Iron Lad had managed to triangulate the location of the missing Stark Industries product. Now they all wait as Cassie scouts the inside of the hideout, shrunk down to the size of an insect. She had been feeding them information from the inside for the last ten minutes.
“We’re almost in place,” Patriot’s voice calls over the com. He and Hulkling are making their way down the left side of the house towards the kitchen area were Mammoth is making a sandwich. Hawkeye is outside the bedroom were Jinx is doing meditation exercises. Iron Lad is waiting for the get go to burst through into the basement were Gizmo is trying out his new toy. Stature is in the same bedroom were Shimmer is taking a nap.
“Make sure everyone in the house is pacified, I want a chance to talk to Surge alone.”
“I don’t like it Cap, she’s more dangerous than you give her credit.”
“I think I can handle myself Eli, just stay on target.”
“You’re the boss man.”
“Going in three…two…one.”
Hawkeye angles her shot to do minimum damage to the screen as the arrow flies through and into the wall. The arrow hits the wall and green gas begins to fill the room quickly. Jinx’s eyes snap open and glow an angry blue.
“Oh s&^t,” Kate says diving out of the way as the window along with the wall around it disintegrate. She tumbles to the right and comes up reaching for a stun arrow in her quiver. Jinx walks around the corner and Kate fires the electrified missile. Jinx sends a bolt of mystical energy streaking at Kate while destroying the arrow with a flick of her finger.
Hawkeye lunges to the left to avoid the blast as is destroys the chain link fence behind her.
With no time to fit the arrow into her bow, Kate grabs an explosive tipped arrow and throws it at the ground near Jinx feet in hopes of distracting her. The shower of dirt gives Kate a small gap to attempt another desperate shot. She fires as the ground at her feet throws her down flat on her back knocking the air out of her. Jinx strolls over to stand above her looking down.
“My turn,” she says her eyes and hands crackling with energy. There is a loud thud and she slumps to the ground, the energy disappearing.
“Thought you might need a hand,” Eli says grinning…
Meanwhile
Nathan uses the repulsors in his hands to blast in the window before jumping inside. Gizmo sanctorum is a jungle of computers, devices, and other assorted gadgets that it boggles the mind. Nathan takes his bearings as he aims one of his wrist blasters at the criminal in the stolen armor. “How about making things east on yourself and giving up, I’d really hate to trash all of this.”
“Just in time to try out my new toy,” Gizmo replies.
One of the steel legs slashes at Iron Lad’s skull causing him to step back into the wall. A second appendage slams into the cement blocks inches from Nathan’s head and shatters them. Nathan fires a quick burst of energy at Gizmo who ducks out of the way. The blast slams into a large desk covered with computers. There is a brilliant flash as all of the monitors explode.
“You’re going to pay for those,” Gizmo says, as the legs that smashed the wall hooks back and clips Iron Lad in the side of the helmet. The bio metal helmet is not breached by the blow, but the jarring effect rattles Nathan’s brain. A second leg delivers an uppercut before he can react and he hits the wall hard. Nathan catches a flash of yellow and red as Gizmo darts through the window he came from.
Iron Lad kicks it in to high gear as he follows the escaping criminal. As he comes up out of the basement a gas grill comes flying at his head. There is a single bang and the grill erupts into a mini fireball heading straight at him. Knowing the fire is of little consequence to his suit, Nathan presses forward straight through it. He is rewarded by catching Gizmo as he is just about to reach the side of the house.
The two of them tumble into the chain link fence, Gizmo using the sheer number of appendages to deliver more blows than Iron Lad can block. Iron Lad’s helmet is suddenly abuzz as damage sensors begin to sound warnings. This thing has a little more kick that it said in the files, he thinks. Wanting to end things before anyone gets hurt, Nathan has his armor release a massive charge of energy into the grappled opponent. He is satisfied as circuits fry and render the armor and the man inside immobile.
“Nathan are you there,” Eli’s voice calls over the com.
“I’m here, I got mine down.”
“Good, we’ve got the rest down as well but I still haven’t heard from Cap.”
“I’m on my way to park.”
“We will be there once we’ve got these guys ready for transport…”
A Few Blocks Away
Cap watches as Nori continues to sit on the merry go round, seemingly doing nothing. As discreetly as he could, Cap had gotten the children who were at the park to leave, not wanting anyone to get hurt should things go bad. Now that none were in sight he decides it is time to approach. He walks out from behind the tree, his shield still strapped to his back.
“Nori I want to talk.”
Surge’s head whips around and her eyes narrow with suspicion. Her fingers flex in the power gauntlets and an electric charge begins to crackle.
“Listen, we’ve done this the hard way enough times in the past. I know deep down you’re a good kid, let me help you get back to your old self.”
Nori doesn’t reply but she steps off of the merry go round, her eyes never leaving Steve. Something about her isn’t right Cap realizes. The way she is moving, the look in her eyes.
“Who are you…”
