SHIELD Facility, Westerberg Ma
Gizmo’s grin splits his face from ear to ear as he looks over the schematics of the place one more time. He and Surge are positioned to the rear of what looks like an unassuming warehouse facility. Below the ground, was another storage facility and this one was top secret. According to their source, this place is SHIELD kept the tech that it seized for reverse engineering.
“I feel like a kid getting ready to knock over a candy store,” Gizmo says.
“Keep your head on straight and remember to do your job.”
“You don’t have to worry about that,” he replies, reaching into his backpack and pulls out his laptop. He holds the custom built computer with reverence before he extends the small legs from the bottom. He slowly cracks his knuckles much to the annoyance of his companion as he begins to work. His fingers begin to fly across the keyboard as he sets process after process in motion.
“Are you ready yet,” Mammoth’s voice calls over the com link they all wear.
“This isn’t as easy as the time you killed those two guard dogs with your breath big man. I have to bypass the encryption…”
“None of us really care what you do or how it is that you do it, we’re waiting on you idiot.”
“All right, here you go,” Gizmo answers. With that pronouncement all hell proceeds to break loose at once. Those inside the facility were now finding themselves blind and unable to call for help. The doors are flung open and security guards pour out, scanning for trouble and finding more than they can handle. With Mammoth leading the way like a battering ram, the fearsome five move in. Gizmo hangs back, leaving the fighting to those who enjoy it much more than him. He calmly puts his laptop back in his backpack.
Gizmo picks his way carefully to a side door that has remained shut. He pulls a keycard with wires attached out of his backpack and swipes it through the security lock. The wires start to blink as the card links with his network and run a quick program to find the access code. In a fraction of a second, the screen turns green and the lock is undone. Pulling a small pistol from it’s holster, Gizmo opens the door.
A shot whizzes over his head as the man firing it must have expected a much taller opponent. Gizmo fires his gum which sends a bolt of electricity arcing into the guard. The man crumples to the floor, as all of his muscles spasm violently. Gizmo walks past the man’s still shaking form, giving him no further thought. He glances down the hallway to the next security door. Through that door is the elevator that leads down to the real storage area and ordinance 315.62. Gizmo smiles as the schematics run through his head.
“Are you ready,” Surge’s voice calls as she approaches.
“Let’s go get me some new toys…”
A Few Hours Later, New York City
“Are you sure you guys don’t want to see something other than Transformers 2,” Steve asks as he walks towards the theater, Sharon Carter arm and arm with him. Eli, Teddy, Kate, Nathan and Cassie, collectively know as the Young Avengers, walk ahead of the pair laughing and joking. The teens had been working hard of late, so Cap called for this night out as a break from the rigorous training and patrol schedule. He’d asked Sharon to come along to help him chaperone the group.
“I know giant robots trying to take over the world is a semiannual occurrence for you, but isn’t it nice just to watch it on the big screen once in a while,” Teddy asks.
“I’m just worried about the language…”
“They sell toys for this one Steve, they have to keep it toned down so the little kiddies can get in to watch it.”
“I guess,” Steve replies, still not thrilled about the choice of films. Atleast they hadn’t picked another one of those mindless teen comedies or terrible slasher movie he decides. The line for tickets is long, as to be expected on a Friday night. Shannon gives his arm a squeeze and gives him a reassuring smile. She’s used to my outdated way of thinking or atleast she tries, he muses.
“We could let them see their movie and you and I could go see something else.”
“The last time I let you pick the movie I was the only man in the theater.” This draws a roll of laughter from everyone, Cap included. They reach the back of the line and the teens voices seem to mingle with everyone else’s as Steve’s mind begins to wander. It doesn’t take long for his reverie to be broken by the vibration of his cell phone in his breast pocket of his jacket.
“Steve, go ahead.”
“It’s Tony, the Five have struck again. Are you busy or can you get here?”
“Send me the location and I’ll be there as quick as I can.” Steve closes the phone to find that everyone is already staring at him. “I’ve got to go Tony needs me. I’m sure Sharon can handle the rest of the evening without me.”
“You do realize that we’re old enough to not require a babysitter,” Eli asks.
“I know that it’s just…The more time I spend with you guys I start to think of you like you’re my own,” Steve says. Everyone experiences a moment of silent shock at Cap’s statement and the sincere smile on his face. “I’m gonna catch a cab, that way Sharon can take my car.”
“I’ll go with,” Nathan says.
“I’ll be fine on my own, you deserve the night off as much as everyone else.”
“It’s Ok really, I kind of already saw it. One of the processors in my suit includes a program to download digital media of all types for my enjoyment and to help me acclimate to this era…”
SHIELD Facility, Westerberg Ma
“Thanks for coming Steve,” Iron Man begins, nodding towards Iron Lad as well. The unassuming small town of Westerberg never had any clue that a top secret facility was buried under this innocent looking storage facility on the edge of town. Now it was all over the internet already, yet another embarrassing debacle for SHIELD who has been dealt more than a few recently. “As you can see they hit hard, took what they wanted and were gone before there was any chance to respond.”
“Only it was a little different this time.”
“You saw the videos then I take it?”
“I showed them to him Sir,” Nathan answers.
“Someone is going to a lot of trouble to discredit SHIELD if they are going so far as putting videos of the raid on the internet. And that all seems to be a little bit to grand to just chalk up to the Fearsome Five themselves. I think we’ve got a spider behind the scenes somewhere.”
“I couldn’t agree more,” Tony answers. “And I’m beginning to think more and more that it is an inside job. They knew way too much about all of the facilities they hit and the press was at all three scenes before containment units could arrive. But I really have no idea who to suspect beyond Fury…”
“You know Nick would never endanger innocent people just bring down SHIELD.”
“You said yourself that he has been behaving erratically and more paranoid than usual. How many times have you actually talked to him lately?”
“That is beside the point, he didn’t do this. There has to be someone else within SHIELD that is behind all of this.”
“The problem is Steve there isn’t anyone else with enough clearance to have the information on all of these sites.” Tony turns his head slightly to listen an incoming message through his helmet. “They are ready for us inside when ever,” he says walking towards the buildings. Cap turns back to tell Nathan it’s time to head in but the youth motions Cap to wait back.
“According to this manifest Stark Industries Serial number 63471-5935289 was among the missing.”
“For the sake of agreeing go on.”
“That ordinance is powered by a quantum X-5 series prototype battery. I thing I can configure my long range sensor array to pick up the out bound resonance…”
“It’s all mumbo jumbo to me, but we’ll see what we can do after we leave here.”
“Shouldn’t we tell Mr. Stark about this?”
“Let’s just play this one close to the vest…”
