----------Home of Adam and Rose Steiner, Sunday June 14th, 11:41PM----------
I'll never understand why people glorify criminals.
Robin thinks as he forces open a second floor bedroom window on the home of the recently deceased Detective Adam Steiner. Despite the recent violent murder of one of Gotham's finest, the home is remarkably quiet. Two days following her husbands murder Rose Steiner, his wife of one year, abandoned the home for more physically and mentally comfortable lodgings with her parents. A river of roses, left by stranger and friend alike, flow down the driveway and into the street, a testament to the life that was lost.
Maybe this countries romanticism with outlaws began back in the old west, or maybe it's always been there and it's merely human nature to find excitement in a life most know they'll never live.
Tim slips through the bedroom window and slides immediately to the computer, letting his dexterous fingers begin their gentle prying against the keyboard. In a matter of seconds Drake circumvents the computers meager password, his wife's name, and begins his slow and methodical search of program files and saved documents.
Either way most people believe criminals operate toward some grand scheme to commit the perfect crime, when in truth mans motives for crime haven't changed since the beginning of time. Hatred and intolerance, fear and jealousy, and above all greed.
Robin uncovers the files containing Steiner's bank statement and opens them eagerly. His lips curl into a smile and he shakes his head with disbelief as, just as he had suspected, the Detectives bank account contained far more money than a man with his position should possess. He prints the document and as he reaches to the printer to retrieve it, his attention is stolen by a small business card tacked to the corkboard above the printer. A card that could not possibly be a coincidence.
----------Office of Commissioner James Gordon, Monday June 15th, 8:07AM----------
"Have a seat Detective," Commissioner Gordon instructs Detective Xavier Phillips, the recently deceased Adam Steiner's partner. Phillips sinks into the soft leather chair in front of Gordon's desk, his sleepless frame barely able to remain upright. "We could have done this another time Detective," Jim says while patting Xavier on the shoulder and sitting before him on his desk. "I mean, you should take as much time as you need."
"No need sir," Phillips interjects while waving his hand before his face, "I actually haven't stopped working yet."
"Detective, you know department policy regarding these situations, and you're not going to take any official part in the investigation." Gordon states while dropping back to his feet and crossing his arms across his chest.
"But sir, I've already.."
"Perhaps you didn't understand me Detective," The Commissioner interrupts, "You can't participate officially, what you do in you spare time is none of my business."
"Understood sir," Xavier begins as a sly smile grows on his weary face, "that's actually why I'm here."
"You have an idea who did this?"
"Yes sir," Xavier replies while removing a case file from his backpack. "Her name is Amanda Fischer," he states while passing the file to the Commissioner. "We responded to her complaint that she was sexually assaulted by McKay a month ago from this Friday," he says while leaning back in his chair and closing his tired eyes.
"Any truth to the allegations?" Gordon questions while pouring through the case file.
"I thought so," the Detective responds while rising from his chair and pointing to a section of the report. "She had a rape kit done the following morning, and DNA was recovered, as well as skin cells under her fingernails. And as you can see right here," he says while guiding Gordon's eyes to a specific section of text, "McKay had a long scratch running the length of his forearm."
"Did you get a warrant to compel him to give us a DNA sample?" Gordon asks while nodding his approval.
"Steiner said he was gonna take care of that, that I was ...how did he say it...to personally invested." Rage builds behind Phillips eyes upon remembering his partners condescending words.
"You're a Detective, you should be invested!" Jim snaps back in anger, clearly disappointed with his Detectives inaction. "Did Detective Steiner take care of it?"
"Right after we caught this case all those super junkies started popping up and kind of diverted our attention." The Detective replies while trying to excuse his actions.
"Answer the question Detective!" Gordon shouts while locking an icy gaze on his junior Detective.
"After McKay got killed I asked him what he did with the case and he told me it was taken care of." Xavier replies while shaking his head in disgust. "I know I should have followed up more strenuously, but he was my superior, and I believed what he told me."
Gordon storms around his desk and flops into his chair, anger and disbelief clouding his thoughts. "Grab a uniformed officer and go pick up Miss Fischer," The Commissioner orders while burying his face in his hands, "and this time try not to get side tracked along the way."
