The morning after, Connie Willbanks' Estate
The morning air lays stagnant even after investigators crack open the sliding glass doors that exit onto the back patio. After making sure the crime lab has combed the interior, Detective Homes excuses himself bathroom. 13 years on the force, he thinks he's unshakable, but with the sight of Connie's body, his stomach tightens and churns just like it had when he saw his first deceased victim. Although, this time around there is no projectile vomiting involved on Homes part. A few minutes later he steps from the bathroom, his face lightly dampened by tap water. His partner, and fellow homicide detective, Detective Libowitz, shakes his head at the sight sprawled before them on the carpeted living room floor.
"Lets just get started Larry, maybe the routine of it all will push the creepiness of it all out of our minds?"
Libowitz nods in agreement, not sure how to reply. "...sure."
"Well, she was clearly murdered in her bedroom. With 9-1-1 calls coming in at 12:12, and 12:15, we can only assume that's close to the time of death. We know what killed her, he head was found still in the grip of a noose, half a football field from here. The rope used was taken from the garage, the instrument used to cut open her bedroom screen hasn't been found."
"Probably something of hers also." Libowitz interrupts. "But what's on my mind is why kill this lady, that seems to have no enemies, not take anything from the home, there's not even rape as a motive." The big man throws his arms wide, over his head in a show of confused exasperation.
Homes rubs the fingertips of his left hand across his forehead as the wheels begin to turn. "Mrs. Willbanks was acquitted of two cases of first degree murder."
"You think that could be a motive? No one gunned down O.J., the Natalie Holloway guy, or Scott Peterson. When everyone was fairly convinced that they of their guilt regardless of what courts ruled."
"Jeffery Dahmer was killed in prison." Homes offers.
"That was in prison though, and it was a black guy who did it too. Most of Dahmer's victims were African American males. So are we looking for twin girls here that are outraged that this woman might have killed her twins?"
"Maybe an outraged parent? ...or someone that's steamed that she slipped through the cracks, and got a "get out of jail free" card?"
"Like... some kinda vigilante?"
"It's really too early to tell for sure what the motive was, but we can try to decipher this." Home points toward the white shag carpet, stained red in areas from the victims bleeding. Both men give their full attention to the deceased lady at their feet. Her nude, decapitated body laying face up, that is if she still possessed a face. Her arms spread wide over her shoulders, gracefully like a ballerina in the middle of one of those pirouette-leaps. Along the carpet, smeared in a pattern that looked as if it had been done by hand, the deep crimson of the victims blood encircled her body in a sort of crosshairs pattern.
