SPEEDY

“Thwack”

The arrow thudded into the center of the bullseye with a heavy smack.

“I told you I was better old man.”

Oliver Queen, aka the Green Arrow lifted himself up from his crouch on the other side of the rooftop and lifted his hand up to his eyes.

“Nope sorry kid, mine is still closer.”

Mia rolled her eyes and stood up to join him.

“There is no shame in coming in second Ollie, you still shoot pretty good for an old geezer.”

Ollie growled and pounced towards her. Mia back flipped gingerly into the air and landed softly on the ledge of the building. She sprinted across the edge and leaped sideways over Ollie's head landing perfectly behind him. Ollie spun around and barked.

“How many hours a day do you spend training with Connor?”

Mia chuckled.

“About as many as you spend boinking Dinah.”

Ollie's face turned red. But he smiled and stepped closer.

“I know I didn't raise my girl to have such a filthy mouth.”

He reached out and put her in a headlock, rubbing his knuckles into her scalp.

“Come on squirt, lets go inside. I need to make sure Connor didn't put any of that nasty vegan crap in my chili. Plus, speaking of the pretty bird, she should be home for dinner soon.”

Ollie kicked open the door leading back into the town house. Mia turned back to the edge of the building and began to walk away.

“Ill be in soon, I want to get a few more practice shots in before we go out on patrol tonight.”

Ollie smiled and closed the door behind him as he descended the steps leading into the house. Mia walked to the edge of the building and sat down. She dangled her legs over the side of the building. And pulled her hood back letting her blond hair fall down her back. She removed her eye mask and rubbed her eyes. A small yawn escaped her lips and she knew the night ahead was going to be a long one. She looked out over the skyline watching the lights of Star City flash.

The road to get where she was now had been long and hard. Some times when she was alone, she would sit here and think about her life. She would think about how lucky she was, for so many reasons.

I don't remember my mother. I like to think that she loved me. All my father ever told me was that she died when I was little.

My father, if thats what you want to call him, would tell me he loved me. I will never forget the nights of terror when he would drag me out of bed so that his friends could rape and abuse me. When I got older, I ran away. On my own, I realized that the only way for a 15 year old girl to survive was to again use my body.

I met Richard, he told me he loved me. I guess the men who loved me, all had delusions of grandeur. Richard used me to make money so that we could both get high. I tolerated it, because at least now, I got to choose who I was sleeping with.

I will never forget the night that changed my life. At 17, Richard behind my back arranged for me to be the next little girl for perverted Star City Senator. The man was fat, disgusting, and tried to make me do things that I didn't want to. As he was about to force himself on me, I met HIM.

The Green Arrow burst into the apartment and began slinging his arrows. I remember being huddled in the corner as he burst into the room and almost took the senators head off when he realized what was going on. The compassion in his eyes when he looked at me was something I will never forget.

Scared, and angry I ran from the building and headed back to Richards place. I told him that I didn't want to trick any more. He responded by slapping me and throwing me on the bed. I managed to grab the knife that he kept near the bed and I slammed it into his knee.

Again I was alone, I ran for days, stealing what I had to to survive. Eventually I found the Star City youth center one day and saw a tall handsome blond man with a familiar beard. I didn't know who he was trying to fool, but I instantly knew who it was.

Ollie hired me on at the center. And let me move into the town house he was living in. I was skeptical at first, but his generosity was from the heart. I feel in love with both Ollie and his son Connor. It wasn't a sexual love, but a true from the heart love. I had found two men who would care about me and protect me from the hard world out there.

I lived with them for over a year, taking care of them during the day and waiting up at night as they patrolled the city as the Green Arrow's. I begged and begged for them to train me and take me with them, but Ollie was being stubborn. He had basically adopted me and was to worried that I would get hurt. On nights when they weren't around I would practice with a bow on the roof.

Events happened in the city that no one could have expected. A demonic spell sealed the city from the outside and warrior demons were cutting down anyone who broke the law. Ollie formed a mob of thugs, criminals, and law enforcement officers to work together and infiltrate the source of the spell. I finally convinced him to take me with him. I was good with a bow and Connor had been training me in the martial arts. I dressed in black and went out with my heroes. We managed to quell the demonic spell and Ollie made me hang up my bow.

A few months later would change everything.

Ollie was abducted by Brick, the cities new crime boss. I managed to track him down and I ambushed his captors. In the process I got cut on some glass and Ollie freaked out rushing me to the hospital. I promised him I was ok, but when I blood work came back my past returned to haunt me.

I was HIV positive.

It hit me like a hammer, but it hit Ollie like a truck. I knew that one day I would probably test positive. My hard life of drugs and prostitution had to eventually catch up to me.

Ollie took me home and paid to get me on the best medicines with the best doctors.

He really loves me, like the daughter he never had.

I told him a few days later that I wanted to be his sidekick. He of course said no at first, but when I told him that I wanted to make a difference with what was left of my life, he understood and said yes. Since then I have gone out on patrol with him every night. I took the mantle left behind by Roy Harper. The Green Arrow needs a Speedy to watch his back.

He is the father I always wanted.

Tomorrow is my 19th birthday, the last 4 years have been a whirlwind, but I am finally happy. I finally have a family.

Mia stood up and aimed her bow. She pulled back an arrow until her arm began to tremble. She let go and the arrow sailed into the center of a green arrow that was embedded in the center of the target. Mia's arrow split the green arrows shaft and hit the bullseye with a thwack.

She smiled and headed towards the door. As she opened it she called down.

“See who's closer now old man.”
