Avengers Mansion, New York
“How are the ribs old timer,” Eli asks, a broad grin spreading across his face. The day after their battle with Solomon Grundy the Young Avengers were back at the mansion, helping with the repairs. Cap was just now arriving home after his over night stay for observation at one of SHIELD’s finest medical facilities.
“I wish I’d been there to see it,” Cap says his smile just as wide.
“They looked like real pros out there,” Tony Stark says.
“It was awesome, I think there’s actually a video of it on youtube,” Teddy says.
“Have they had any luck picking up escapees,” Kate asks.
“A few here and there but for the most part not really. Grundy was the only heavy hitter housed there, the rest were mostly small timers who used gadgets. I’m sure a lot of them will be heading back to New York guys and gals. So if you guys feel up to it, would you mind hitting the streets?”
“You heard the man, let’s suit up and head out,” Eli says leading the charge towards their rooms. The teens quickly disappear amidst shouted boasts and jokes at each others expense. Steve and Tony watch them leave before they turn to speak to each other.
“Was Grundy one of the escapees and you just somehow neglected to put his name on the list?”
“I’ve really gotten enough grief over…”
“No you put lives in danger Tony.”
“I can’t stress to you the amount of precautions that were taken to house Grundy. His cell cost more than the entire rest of the facility…”
“But it wasn’t enough,” Cap says with force. “You’re excuses aren’t going to work on me just like I’m not buying you’re domestic terrorist excuse to hold people off the books.”
“I don’t have the time nor the desire to explain my every action to you. The streets were safer because SHIELD took those lowlifes off the streets.”
“At what cost Tony,” Steve replies. “You’re a man who is always figuring the worth of things, are safer streets worth a country were anyone can be thrown in jail for no reason for as long as the government decides?”
“Right now I’m worried about how someone knew one of my facilities inside and out. They took that place apart like they had built it themselves. When they got to the basement they went directly to the pumps that controlled Grundy’s cell.”
“Gizmo is renowned for being a tech wiz, he probably hacked a SHIELD database somewhere.”
“There is one problem with that theory. I drew up the schematics for Grundy’s cell and everything involved with it by hand. It doesn’t exist on a database anywhere.”
“Sounds like you have a wolf in your fold,” Cap replies.
“And I’ll be damned if I know were to start looking, I went through the entire roster with a fine tooth comb when I took over. That is why I’m asking you to get in touch with Nick and see if he has anything on my leak.”
“To tell you the truth, I haven’t heard from Nick since I took over the teams training…”
Location, Unknown
Black and silence that was all Nick Fury knew and that was all he had known for an undetermined length of time. Whoever had taken him was a real pro he had to admit. Fury had no clue what happened because he just woke up here in a dark cell. Since that point in time, there was nothing to distinguish the passage of time. He had explored the small simple steel cell in the dark to find a cot and a toilet, food was slid in through a slot on the bottom of the door. No one had some much as opened the door or spoken a word when they left food.
It felt completely wrong to Nick that no one had attempted to question him. If they had just wanted to kill him then he would never have woke up. As one of the most wanted men in the country right now he couldn’t see how someone could have taken him as a bargaining chip. That meant that his captors wanted something from him, most likely information.
Perhaps his captors were wiser than he first considered Nick muses. Over the years, he had been subjected to all manner of torture techniques at one time or another. His will had been tested over and over and he had yet to give up information even during the most extreme circumstances. His iron will was a thing of legend, making his reputation known and that works against him. They were using the one thing against him that no one had ever thought to try and that was time.
Fury’s mind had been working non stop since the moment he had awakened here. He’d run through a list of suspects in his kidnapping a mile long. The fact that he was still alive had eliminated many of the suspects but not enough that he could make any headway. He’d gone over in his head all of the possible reasons that someone would snag him and the best reason was for information. The fact that no one had so much as talked to him once threw that idea into doubt. The fact that Fury was left alone to his own paranoid devices was the greatest torture conceivable.
Suddenly there is the sound of metal on metal and the door to his cell is opened allowing bright fluorescent light to spill in blinding Nick. His eyes take some time to adjust after days in the dark and even when they have the figure standing in the door is little more than a dark shape. The frame is that of a towering man of very large girth with a smooth shaven head. Squinting, Nick adds a few details about the man but in the end he can’t place him.
“Mr. Fury I hope you don’t find your accommodations to unpleasant.”
“Is it to much to ask for some salt on the so called food around here?”
“It’s nice to see you haven’t lost your sense of humor. If you would be so kind as to follow me there is someone who would like to speak with you. Let me assure you that I am more than capable of handling myself so please don’t make me injure you.”
Nick rises to his feet and stretches, trying to size up the other man up close. He does look like he’s gonna be a tough SOB Nick muses to himself. He steps out into the hall were he and the other man proceed side by side. Nick takes as much detail in as he can as he quickly formulates his plan of action. No one else in sight and a ventilation shaft overhead from the looks of it he notes. As they pass down the hall Fury takes no notice of the cell door less than ten feet from his own.
Inside the other cell two men sit in the darkness. One sits on the cot his arms folded across his chest and his gaze focused on the other man. The second is strapped into a large chair that has been designed to specifically accommodate his abnormal frame. A myriad of wires run from his extremely large head into a large black box set into the back wall of the cell.
“Very good Mr. Hammond,” the man on the cot says. “I hope for your sake that you extracted all of the information that I asked you to.”
“Of course I did. There were some things that were that were protected by mental barriers that must have been implanted by a powerful psychic. Since you cautioned me to keep my intrusions unknown to Fury and I was able to obtain the information without testing these barriers, I left them alone. Now, uphold you’re end of the bargain and release me.”
“I’m afraid now is not the time for that Hector…”
