*SPLASH*
Hitting the water feels more like hitting a wall made of concrete. Solid concrete reinforced by adamantium. Yeah, that is exactly what is feels like. I watch the cloud of bubbles created my entrance swirl around me while floating to the surface. I need to get back up there. Jaime, Paco, Brenda, Bette and Melody are still up there fighting. Melody. This really wasn't supposed to be how things went, I mean with me being a super hero and all I should have figured this is how things would go. But I still hoped.
"So this League thing you're working on, it going to work?" She wraps her arms around my mine as we walk down Michigan Avenue. The bustling crowd around us barely taking any notice to them we're just another couple and I'm not complaining.
"I don't know. Without the others who knows, they embody so much, you know? They inspire, they..." I stammer, Clark, Diana and Bruce had entrusted me to form a Justice League, a team to protect the planet from all kinds of threats and what I have done since then? Look at a list and have coffee with Mari, at least she's in. What a great leader I'm going to be.
"They're just like you Theodore Kord, they're heroes." The way that she says it, makes me believe, if only for a second that I can hold a candle next to them. That if Darkseid came here right now I could fight him and win. God I love her so much.
"When this thing gets going I might not be around much, you OK with that?" The last few weeks have been so serene I don't want them to disappear.
"So long as you save the world, I think I'll deal."
"TEDDDDDDDDD!" I hear her scream as I come to the surface, my gasp for air is barely an audible escape from my mouth as I watch the scene on the beach. I watch as Paco, Brenda and Melody sprint to the tree line for cover as Bette and Jaime fend off our giant mechanical attacker.
The energy cannon that forms out of Jaime's arms is impressive I watch as orbs of static electricity hover around it as it charges. You know, you always think that having the power to summon fish would be useless but I'm a ways out and I don't think that I can swim fast enough. Wish I could ride a dolphin right now, or a narwhal, those are tropical right?
I watch as Betty throws a Lady Bug dart at the Android. Its name is Carapace, my uncle Jarvis tried to create an army of them, Dan Garrett, my predecessor stopped Jarvis and the Carapace androids. He died saving me, and the world.
"You know I don't think that those will work? Got anything else?" Jaime shouts to Bette. "I know Scarab I'm asking her."
"I've got a grapple?" Bette rolls kicking up sand as she does so. "You're the one with an energy cannon remember?"
Jaime unleashes the static energy; I watch it flood out of his arm. The Scarab that covers his body is what gave Dan his powers, and Dan only unlocked a small portion of them, something that I could never do. Then Jaime came along and found the Scarab during an OMAC attack, he bonded with it and my predecessor was born. It's a legacy; I can tell already he's going to lead the next generation.
"What is it?" The little girl looks at the beetle shaped device. It's one of my old model bugs, still better then most anything on the market for retail today. "I mean can I play music on it? Where can I put my Hannah..."
"What do you tell Mr. Kord." Her father looks down at his daughter, with only a look a dad can have. I think there is a special class where you learn that.
"Thank you Mr. Kord." She says, batting her eyes up and down. I fight the urge to laugh; the Reyes's have such a great family.
"Why don't you go play with it upstairs? While Mr. Kord and I wait for Jaime to get home from school." He says standing up, he presses down on his cane using it for support. My eyes wander to the floor of the house; I can see the imprints from the cane on the wooden floor along with a variety of other scratches that have accumulated over the years.
"Would you like a drink Mr. Kord, it's a little early I know but..." He walks towards an oak cabinet, resting his cane against a wall. Jaime never told me what happened to his dad to give him the limp. I haven't asked.
"Whatever you're having, and please call me Ted." I stand up leaving a swollen imprint in the couch. Now matter what time of year it is, Texas stays hot, Gina should have told me.
"How is Jaime doing in school? Are the laptops donated by KordOmniversal helping?" I ask walking towards the window. The sound of a slamming car door turns my attention towards the driveway. I watch as Jaime's mother gets out of the car, along with Jaime, and his friends Paco and Brenda.
"The school is fine and he's pulling grades that make us proud. Although his extracurricular activities keep him from other things." He hands me a small glass, I think it might be a shot of tequila which usually means very long nights. There's an undertone to his words. I think he thinks I'm responsible for Jaime becoming the next Blue Beetle, in a way I suppose I am. But that's why I'm here, I'm going to make it up to him.
"For the last time Paco no." Jaime opens the door to the house.
"Just think about it OK, I think we could..." Paco, is bigger then I am, taller at least, I think he might even have a few pounds on me.
"Paco we are not using the Scarab to become professional gamers, how do you even get these ideas?" The short red head shoves him a little jokingly. From everything that Jaime has told me Brenda is the group’s voice of reason.
"I was watching the Sci Fi channel and they have this show where these alternative nerds play videogames for an ultimate cash prize and I figured what better to beat a videogame then an alien computer." He shrugs as he explains his logic.
"When you put it that way, how could I say no?" Jaime jokes, setting down his backpack realizing that his father and I stand in the threshold of the living room.
"Dad, Mr. Kord." Jaime looks at me like he's seeing a ghost, it's been to long I know. But not anymore. "Is something wrong?"
"No, I was hoping that you and your friends might want to take a trip with me."
