“I told you,” Gizmo says, his voice laced with mockery. The newly reformed fearsome five sits around a table in an empty greasy spoon diner in Brooklyn. The staff at the eatery had taken their orders, served them their food, and left without any comment. The five had sat patiently eating their food and waiting for their contact to arrive. “Eating that much bacon is going to give you heartburn every time.”
“Shut the f^%k up you little troll. Does anyone have any Tums or Rolaids,” Mammoth asks with a pained expression.
“I think you guys both need to take your meds or something,” Jinx says
“Stay out of this q-ball,” Mammoth replies with a snarl. Jinx flicks her finger in Mammoth’s direction and sends a small wisp of smoke into the large man’s mouth. This draws a groan of pain as the gas intensifies his already aching stomach.
“You’ll be fine,” Shimmer says, annoyed by her dimwitted brother. “This guy has about two minutes and he’s officially late.”
“I am never late let me assure you,” a familiar voice says. The same nondescript man they met with last time is now closing the door and locking it. His appearance is much like the last time they saw him, right down to the patches of dirt in the same places. “I have been instructed to inform you that your performance was exemplary. A bonus has been put in you account.”
“It was enjoyable,” Surge replies, her voice distant.
“Does this meeting indicate that we are going to receive a second job offer,” Jinx adds.
“Yes it does. I am instructed to give you this disk and the code 5329ktp071. All the information is on that disk and unless there is some sort of problem we will maintain the same method of payment.” He pauses to allow them a chance to respond. “Then I will take my leave,” he says placing the disk on their table and exiting through the kitchen.
“Alright,” Mikron says, pulling a laptop out of his backpack. He plugs the travel disk into the USB port and entering the code. The files begin to transfer directly to his hard drive and there is a ding when they are done. He clicks on the folder and begins to look through it’s contents. “Looks like our mysterious leader has it in for SHIELD.”
“It’s another SHIELD instillation,” Shimmer says.
“Yeah it a special weapons depot.”
“Sounds like fun,” Mammoth adds.
“It also says someone will be joining us for this one.”
“Any mention of who or why,” Jinx asks.
“No but…wow…we’re getting a raise…”
Back in Baltimore
“Kate make him a pin cushion,” Cap yells as he ducks under a massive fist that crushes brick. Hawkeye’s bow begins to sing as she sends a barrage of arrows streaking into the zombie’s upper body. Cap motions Eli into action as they give Grundy the old high low with Cap hitting him in the front of the legs while Patriot slams into his back. This knocks the monster flat on his stomach with a tremendous boom.
“What now,” Teddy asks.
“Cassie, Kate and Teddy I need you guys to get above ground and make sure everyone is out of the area. We have to take him back up top, there isn’t enough room for us to move down here.” The three younglings comply as Steve and Eli circle the giant who is already rising to his feet. “Hey ugly over here.”
“Two star mans now Grundy have big fun.”
Cap and Patriot both make the same throw, striking the already weak ceiling above the monster’s head. Both men catch their shields as they return and the street above crumbles. Grundy lets out a roar that is overpowered by the crash of tons of rock.
“All clear up here,” Teddy shouts.
“Let’s go,” Cap says as the pair makes their way to the street above. “Spread out I want,” Cap begins as suddenly the ground underneath him erupts. Steve flies through the air only to smash into a building and hit the ground with a dull thud. He does not get up.
“Holy S$%t,” someone screams.
“This is director Stark in route,” Iron Man’s voice sounds over their intercoms. “I’ll be there in less than a minute Steve.”
“Steve is down,” Vision replies.
“Cassie, grab Cap and get him out of here. Kate and Teddy she’s going to need a distraction.” With that Eli leads the charge at the zombie as he crests the top of the hole. With his attention focused on Patriot, Grundy is takes by surprise as Hulkling rakes claws across his back as he flies past. Even as he banks out of the way of a massive fist, the first of Hawkeye’s explosive tipped arrows explode on the monster’s chest. There is the smell of burnt flesh as the arrows burn at him but does little except anger the giant.
Eli launches himself into the beast hoping to knock him back into the hole. An enraged Grundy launches Eli with a boot to the shield that sends him flying into a parked car 20 feet away. The beast’s face splits into a grin as he begins to charge Kate. She continues to send arrow slamming into the behemoth as he closes the distance. Vision rockets in between the two and increases his density to his maximum level. The zombie collides with the android and they both are knocked off course.
“We’ve got to do something here,” Teddy calls.
“I’m on my way,” Cassie says, her giant form emerging from the other side of the stadium. “Cap’s on his way to the hospital.”
“Guys, I’m about one minute out and I think I have a plan,” Nathan’s voice comes over their com.
Eli’s vision is blurry as he staggers to his feet, reaching for his fallen shield. Grundy is picking himself up and Kate sprinting away peppering him with arrows to the head. Teddy is coming in low for a second pass with his claws extended. Cassie has picked up a huge chunk of broken sidewalk and throws it at the zombie. Her aim isn’t perfect but it catches him in the shoulder and spins him around.
“Teddy going up,” Eli signals. Teddy responds by swooping even lower and grabbing Grundy from behind by his legs. Hulkling arcs straight up and pours on the speed for his ascent. Grundy flails helplessly as he is unable to twist enough to swing at Teddy. “Now,” Eli signals and Teddy lets his drop. The zombie drops to the asphalt with a thud just as Cassie moves in to position. As soon as he hits the ground Cassie’s right fist drives his further into the pavement.
“Vision, I need you,” Nathan calls over the com. Meet me over to of the stadium.”
The recovering android launches into the air just as the zombie begins to pick himself up out of the rubble. Eli’s shield spins through the air and slams into Grundy’s face as he gets to his feet. Cassie delivers a backhand that sends him slamming into the front window of a sports bar.
“Everyone pull back a bit,” Vision says over the com as he streaks back into view with Iron Lad trailing. The android glows a bright red as he streaks towards the behemoth shifting to a wraithlike density. He passes into Grundy and suddenly for the first time the monster screams in pain. Vision flashes out the other side of the beast and calls “Let him have it.”
Hawkeye’s arrows strike first, one of the blasting a hole clean through Grundy. Teddy’s razor sharp claws sever an arm as he flies past. Eli’s shield performs the coup de grace severing the monsters head from his shoulders. Iron Lad’s shot soon reduce the zombie to little more than a smoking pile of ash.
“Nice work everyone. Vision recalibrate the energy absorption matrix gradually or you could risk damage.”
“What are you doing out of bed,” Cassie asks as she begins to shrink back down to normal size. “And how did you know about all of this?”
“I sent out a priority one call which was picked up by Sid who is programmed to broadcast all high priority calls.”
“I hopped in my armor and put everything it had into speed. I downloaded all the files I could on Grundy on the way here and my tactical processor suggested the he might not be so resilient on the inside.”
“Looks like I missed all the fun,” The voice of Iron Man calls from above…
