The Next Day, New York City
“Is my tie straight Jarvis,” Tony Stark asks trying to eye ball it as he adjusts it himself. He isn’t looking forward to this press conference, something that seemed to go hand and hand with accepting the job as head of SHIELD. Unlike running Stark Industries were he called a press conference to announce every new development, now the press only wanted to rake him over the coals when something went wrong. And today promises to be one of the least pleasant in a long time.
“Do you really think anyone is going to notice your tie Sir?”
“Have to keep up appearances. I better get out there, they’re really tearing into Daniels.” With that, Tony steps for behind the curtain and is blinded by the usual flash of cameras He doesn’t flash a trademark Tony Stark grin as he makes his way to the podium. His demeanor is more subdued as his press secretary tries to organize the chaos so the press conference can begin.
“Ladies and gentlemen of the press, Mr. Stark is going to give a statement and perhaps answer a few questions.”
“Answer a few questions,” a voice raises above the throng. “How about explaining how nearly 100 criminals were broken out of one of his SHIELD facilities last night. Many of whom were not even officially in any kind of custody.”
“We can’t conduct…”
“How about the fact that facility was rated minimum security but there reportedly dozens of formerly costumed felons…”
“What passes for minimum security is open to debate Mr. Wilkins, Tony Stark says stepping up to the microphones now. “Let me assure you there has been a series of misunderstandings all of the criminals confined at the P.O.D. facility were there lawfully. I think that many of persons in question were detained under the definition suspected domestic terrorists and pursuant to section eight of the registration act they can be detained in a minimum security facility until such time as they are formally charged.”
“So by that standard you are saying the government of the United States has given you the authority to hold citizens and non citizens alike indefinitely under the guise of terrorism.”
“The issue is not as simple as you are making it out to be sir.”
“What about the fact that several eye witnesses report seeing the Hulk escaping from the area?”
“That is absolutely preposterous the Hulk is not in any sort of custody let alone at that facility.”
“If that is true why will you not release a list of escapees?”
“This is a matter of national security and every measure that needs to be taken has been. All of the recourses of SHIELD as well as other government agencies are already working to recapture all of the prisoners. I have nothing further to say at this time, thank you.” To a chorus of shouted questions Tony Stark exits the same way he came.
“That certainly could have gone better sir.”
“You have a way with understatements Jarvis. Has the Checkmate representative arrived for the meeting yet?”
“Miss Bordeaux’s helicopter is about two minutes away from landing sir.”
“Very good have some refreshments brought to the south end boardroom. I have a feeling this could be a long night…”
Baltimore, Downtown
“Keep your eyes peeled and maintain constant contact,” Cap says into his com. Upon hearing about the jailbreak he had decided to bring the team here to help try and recapture the missing prisoners. Vision had gotten the files from SHIELD and they had split into two person teams. So far only Kate and Eli had managed to come across a couple of small time mob enforcers from this list.
“Hulkling and I are continuing or aerial search pattern but so far we have been unsuccessful,” Vision reports. “We’re moving closer to the airport, I am sending SHIELD a report so they can give us clearance.”
“Are we just supposed to go from subway train to subway train, I’m almost out of tokens,” Kate asks.
“It’s netted us the only catches of the night so far. We’re only going to stay out another hour or so,” Cap says. He switches his com off and looks over to Cassie. Her eyes move among the crowd, checking the fans as they make their way towards the gate of the stadium for the baseball game. “Do you want a snack, there is a hotdog vendor over there.”
“I could really use something to drink.” The duo makes their way to the cart and purchase a pair of way overpriced bottles of pop. “Do you really think any of our perps would show up at a baseball game?”
“When I woke up out of the ice, one of the first things I wanted to do was go watch a Yankee’s game. I always remember sitting in the bleachers with my old man glove in hand waiting on a homerun ball.”
“That must seem like a million years ago after all the things you’ve been through.”
“Sometimes those memories are clearer to me than things that happed last year.”
“Steve there is something I’ve wanted to ask you for a long time.” Cassie pauses to find the right words. “Do you think my dad would be proud of me?” This takes Cap completely by surprise and he turns to regard the young woman.
“Your dad was one of the bravest men I’ve ever met. When you became sick he didn’t hesitate to put himself on the line for you even when it was going to cost him his freedom. To him being a hero was it’s own reward no matter the risks. Now you’re following in his footsteps and trying to make the world a better place. You follow your heart just like he always did, there is no doubt in my mind.”
“Thank you,” is all she says, turning quickly to try and hide the tears welling up in hers eyes.
A scream splits the night causing Cap to turn. The street in front of the stadium splits and people run for cover. Chunks of it give way and fall into the sewer below. A pale white hand reaches up from below and begins to pull a body up after it.
“Cassie start getting people out of here,” Cap says, unslinging his shield from his back. He moves closer to the hole as the head of Solomon Grundy raises up above street level. “Tells the others to hurry,” is the last thing he says as Cap dives at the zombie knocking the both of them into the sewer below…
