SHIELD Helicarrier
“Mr. Stark will see you now,” the agent tells Sam. Sam downs the rest of his cup of coffee and throws the cup into a small trash can. The can had many other cups like that one and the wrappers from vending machine food. Sam was not in the best of moods now, but then again waiting for over six hours had a way of doing that. The only question was did Stark make him wait intentionally or was he really indisposed. The agent opens the door and gestures for him to enter. Once inside the door closes.
“Sam I am so sorry to keep you waiting, there was a situation in San Francisco and the president wanted Iron Man to handle it personally.”
“No problem, but you guys may want to get better food in the vending machines.” Both men share a laugh at this comment, but it seems manufactured. “Listen I came to talk to you about the other night…”
“Listen, let just lay everything on the table here so we don’t waste each other’s time. Fury sent you here to find out what I know about the Crimson Path. In return I want you to tell me a few things about what happened in Boston.”
“What makes you think I know anything,” Sam replies.
“Listen, I don’t know why Fury has gone underground but if he felt he was in danger running SHIELD, then so am I. I’d like to at least know what I’m going up against.”
“Fair enough, but I’ll let you go first.” Stark reaches into a desk drawer and pulls out a file. He slides it across the desk and Sam picks it up and begins thumb through it.
“Since China has decided it needs to open up to the west, it is becoming a hot bed for extremists. Every province has groups that rally for independence and those that wish for a return to hardline rule. But the Crimson Path seems to be a little different than these groups.”
“How so,” Sam asks.
“They are well funded and have much better training. I’ve called in a lot of favors in that part of the world to get some information on the Path and who they’re linked to. Checkmate intelligence believes that the Crimson Path operates as a murder for hire organization. We think it might be a splinter group that once was part of the KOBRA cult.”
“Looks like the rats are jumping ship now that the snake’s head has been cut off. Any idea who’s in charge?”
“I don’t speculate at what they’re motives might be, what I have is in that report. Now it’s your turn to Sam, tell me what you know.”
“I lay this out as I see it. Back in Boston Cap and I were fighting with Red Skull and crossbones and things weren’t going our way. Crossbones was down, but Skull had Cap sighted. Fury got in unnoticed and put a hole in Skull’s chest the size of a baseball. Next thing we knew, his body had reverted back into the form of a skrull.”
“Are you absolutely sure that it was a skrull?”
“I’ve seen a skrull or two before, I think I would recognize them.”
“Then you and I have much more to discuss…”
Meanwhile
Steve Rogers was not in a good mood as he stalked out of Nick Fury’s office. Fury would give him no information on what Sam was working on, Moon Knight had disappeared since the explosion at hi so called Shadowkeep, and no one had any clue were Deadpool was. And to top it all off, Fury was sending Cap to find the two that were missing like some sort of errand boy.
“I hope I’m not late for anything,” Deadpool says as he casually strolls down the hall. There are several tares in his suit and scorch marks on the legs and feet. Seeing Cap look him up and down, Deadpool replies, “I had a hot date last night.”
“What happened and please give me an actual account of events,” Cap says folding his arms across his chest.
“Fury sent me down to a mom and pop Chinese restaurant downtown, he said one of the guys at the embassy had ties to the place.”
“So he sent you alone?”
“He said there was no time to wait on anyone else or Stark’s people would be down there. The food was great but the service left a little something to be desired shall we say. I decided to take it easy on them but then one of them decided to pull the pin on a grenade.”
“Did you find out anything?”
“I might have gotten the recipe for some killer General Tso’s Chicken.” Deadpool grins under his mask even as Cap gives him the evil eye. “Oh you mean, I get it. They had a damn dog that smelled me in the vent before I could even attempt to listen in on anything. Plus I’m a little rusty as far as my Chinese goes.”
“I am going to have another talk with Nick,” Cap says turning back towards the office door. Deadpool grabs Steve’s arm and Cap spins around. “Don’t touch me.”
“Listen, I did manage to catch something last night, but I didn’t mention it to Fury. Two of the guys, ones who attacked me, were talking about a pick up they had to make. They are going to the docks, to meet a ship bringing in shellfish.”
‘”Shellfish,” Cap replies skeptically. “And you think that shellfish is important how.”
“They got real quiet about it when the manager came over and told them to get back to work.”
“It might be a long shot, but it’s better than sitting here on our hands.” Cap reaches in his pocket and begins to dial his cell phone. “I’ll leave messages for Falcon and Moon Knight, but ...”
Elsewhere
Sam sits back as the agent guides the car into downtown traffic. He resists the urge to check his messages on his phone, worried the man might hear something he shouldn’t. Sam was sure there was a lot of information that Stark was holding back, but what he had shared was helpful. A solid connection to KOBRA was a good start and it certainly was more than they had before.
“Are you sure you want me to let you off at this address sir, I can take you were ever you need.”
“Yes I’m sure and tell the guy who is tailing us that he might as well just pull over now. He needs to go through the SHIELD driving class again.”
“Sorry about that sir,” is all the driver says, his eyes going back to the road. The driver guides the car off the freeway and onto the city streets. Falcon notes the second car doesn’t exit the freeway and continues past. As they make their way to a four way intersection, Sam watches for a new car to pick up the tail. The light turns green and they proceed through the intersection.
As soon as the sound of gunfire erupts Sam dives to the side as glass shatters everywhere. There is a cry of pain from the front seat as the driver is apparently hit. The car veers off course and slams into a building, actually bursting into a small furniture store. The jolt slams Sam into the front seat as the car comes to a halt. Shaking it off as best as he can, tries to open the nearest door.
More bullets begin to spray into the rear of the car, making that exit, impossible. Crawling through the gap between the front seats Sam quickly checks the driver. The man was most likely dead as soon as the bullets struck he decides, as he reaches over and grabs the man’s pistol from his shoulder holster. The bullets stop and Sam moves out the front across glass from the busted windshield.
“What the f^&k,” a man yells from Sam’s right.
“Call 911 and tell them you have a situation bravo tango.”
“What the hell is that supposed to mean?”
“It’s not for them, it’s for the people who are listening in, now go,” Sam yells. The man begins to weave his way through the maze of furniture and towards an office. Sam lays on his belly and looks under the car and sees two sets of legs, moving cautiously towards the hole in the wall. Inching towards his right Sam peeks around the tire. Moving closer are two Asian men with Uzis. Sam snaps off two quick shots, striking one of the men in the shoulder and spinning him to the ground.
A new round of gunfire begins, spraying madly in Sam’s general direction. Keeping behind the front of the car Sam weathers the storm of lead. Sensing a chance, Falcon lays on his belly under the car and draws a bead on the man’s foot. He fires two shots, one into each leg dropping the man instantly. The man’s fall clears Sam’s line of sight to the one that he dropped earlier. The man looks Sam right in the eye as he pulls the pin out of a grenade…
