After being left on his own after a confrontation by S.H.I.E.L.D. and founding members of the Justice League, that proved to be a bit awkward to Ethan as he had no idea as to who they were, it took him only seconds to arrive five hundred plus miles away on the door step of Maxine Winslow. His forefinger presses lightly against the door bell button, and the familiar ding-dong hangs briefly in the air for a second before the door is pulled open. There, standing in the open doorway, a far away, near vacant look in his eyes, is the small figure of a boy that Supreme judges to be about eight years of age.
"... Hello there, son. I'm looking for a lady by the name of Maxine, maybe you can help me?" Supreme speaks softly and evenly so as not to frighten the child, that seemed not to be in his right state of mind.
But Supreme's words fell on seemingly deaf ears as the boy's gaze remained unchanged. A woman Supreme recognized as Maxine rushed to the door, and half knelt at the boys side, pulling him close.
"I'm sorry, he's never answered the door like that before..." The last word comes out slowly and hangs in the air as she looks up and realizes this isn't a neighbor who is outside her home. She excuses herself briefly to see her son safely back to their living room.
"I'm not sure about that new costume of yours. Sure is bold, but it is an improvement over the last one." She jokes somewhat nervously.
Supreme goes along with the small talk for a minute, but his mind stays focused on the child that had answered the door.
Maxine is in mid-sentence when Supreme asks the inevitable, "What's wrong with your child?" as soon as the words have left his lips, he instantly regrets having asked. He wasn't sure how to word the question but implying that something is "wrong" with someones son wasn't the best way to have asked the question.
While Supreme cringes inwardly at his wording, Maxine shoots him a a puzzled look of annoyance. "So you just zip down from Alderon, or wherever, just to check up on my son? After all the..." Ethan knows that he's in for the long haul if he doesn't explain the events that had transpired in his life in the past few days. So he again decides to interrupt, and enlighten her as to how he came back to Earth, how he has no memory to speak of the Supreme she knew. He even explains how he intercepted, and disposed of an asteroid of pure Supremium, leaving her with yet another bemused look on her face.
"... so you break out of a hospital and zoom off to parts unknown and hurl an asteroid into a black hole, all on a hunch?" she asks incredulously
Ethan had danced around mentioning the fact that a voice had directed him into space and to the asteroid of Supremium, but should have known that with her background as a reporter, she would see that their was more to his story. Before even Ethan's mind can formulate a reply to her question, Maxine fires another... "and you say you don't remember anything from ten, fifteen, or more years ago. So how did you know who I was?" Ethan knows he has a lot more explaining to do, and wonders if it would have been better to have let Maxine batter him with the initial barrage of questioning.
They each take a seat, Maxine upon her couch, alongside her son, while Ethan picks a fluffy looking recliner. After taking a deep breath, and a moment to figure out how best to drop the story of Belar, the entity that had been communicating with Ethan telepathically, on Maxine's lap. It takes longer, and more effort than Supreme had counted on to get the whole story out in a believable manner. While skeptical at first, Maxine's doubts faded as Ethan maintained his story against all of her probing, sometimes sarcastic questions.
"Okay, so 'voices' aside," Maxine continued with some follow up queries. "...you know what kind of repercussions sending anything, let alone an asteroid through a black hole can have?"
"Well, I really didn't think there would be any, my only concern was getting the thing off of a collision course with Earth." Supreme replies with a note of defensiveness in his voice.
"That's all well and good, but... and this may sound stupid, but there's a school of thinking that believes black holes function as worm holes to a parallel universe, or dimension, or something like that. Not that I believe everything that I see on the History channel, but it is a frightening possibility. You know, the thought that on some other mud ball of a planet, some caveman could be crawling through the muck to find this giant rock that grants him all your powers."
Supreme stares thoughtfully at her, watching as her fingers dance aimlessly through her sons sandy brown hair. "That doesn't sit well with me, but to be brutally honest, it would be someone elses' problem now."
"Let's hope so." She replies with a smile as she moves from her seat. "Coffee?"
