The sun glares down through the crystalline structure; it's refracted through each crystal beam until it reaches us as strong and bright when it first hit the atmosphere. Each time that I come here, I'm still impressed. One could spend their entire life studying Kryptonian technology and still not even begin to understand it.
"You OK Ted?" Her voice is like music, it just feels good to hear. I feel her placing a hand on my shoulder, her grip is strong. She's a creature of contradictions, beautiful but vicious, a princess but a warrior, a goddesses yet a woman.
"Yeah, just never gets old does it Diana?" I reply turning around, she's dressed in her costume, it takes a lot of self control to not stare, and even then it's hard.
"No, I don't think it does. Even on Paradise Island there is nothing this..." She's nice to not say anything about my jaw on the floor, she's always been nice to me, respected me when the others didn't.
"Surreal." The gruffness seems out of place in here, in the cave its part of the décor, part of the charm. Here it just doesn't seem right.
"If it isn't..." I start but he raises a hand cutting me off before I can finish my joke.
"Nice to see you to Bruce." Diana greets him in almost defense of me. Yeah so far this is going well.
"Sorry I'm late; Prankster set a present to the mayor had to fly it....." Clark flies in through one spaces between the crystalline columns, he makes it look so easy. As he lands I realize what I'm doing and it makes me shake a little.
"Why'd you call us here Ted?" Bruce asks his cowl draped behind his head. At least I get to look him in the eyes when I make an ass out of myself.
"This last year I realized something, ever since Luthor and his war on us, we've had the OMACs, the Global Guardians, everything that has happened. It's our fault." I try to gauge their reactions as I continue. "I mean we've all been so busy fighting our own battles on individual fronts, Gotham, Washington, Metropolis, we've left the world wide open to attack and the bad guys, and the guys we're fighting are starting to realize it. Hell Max was a good guy...well maybe not good, but he was on our side and he realized it even when we still didn't."
"You handled the OMAC's..." It's nice of Clark to say, of course Rip and Booster helped. I don't mean to cut off Superman but I do, I guess I'm going to go for broke here.
"What I'm trying to say is, the world needs The Justice League to protect it when things get to big and the League needs you three, so I'm asking you three to reform it, rebuild it stronger and better then it was before." There's the pitch, let's see what happens now.
They look at each other, for a minute I wish I could read their minds, then as they all look at me; I immediately take that wish back. Clark steps towards me, maybe it's the light from the crystals but the man has a glow to him, it's kinda strange but it's there.
"You're right Ted; the world needs a Justice League." He starts, I think there is a but coming, there's always a but. "But the League doesn't necessarily need us."
"You have more then proved yourself time and time again; you defeated the OMACs and Brother Eye." Diana starts in, I wonder if anyone else thinks it's weird they finish each others thoughts, it's like their twins, but three of them.
"I think I'm a little confused here?" I scratch the top of my head unsure of where this is going.
"You should be the one to lead it." Bruce chimes in, the look on his face is a strange one, and he usually gets it when a plan of his comes full circle. "I've watched you in Gotham, kept tabs on you while you were with Checkmate, you always kept your center, never crossed the line so many of us have."
"You have Apollo's heart. The League needs someone to lead it and we believe it needs the leadership of someone like you." So Bruce has been planning this for a while now, Gotham, Checkmate just tests. I wonder how long Clark and Diana have been in on it.
"You've already thought about this, I'm sure you already have some people in mind to join you. Whenever you need us, we'll be there but the League like the rest of the world is going to need to learn to stand on its own, and you can teach that lesson." Clark's cape billows as he turns around.
"So, you want me to...." I feel a little slow, this isn't going how I planned.
"Ted you'll do fine." She leans in and kisses me on the cheek. "The Gods are watching over you."
I watch as they walk away each of them going back to their homes leaving me alone here in the Fortress of Solitude. I'm going to put together a Justice League; yeah this should go real well.
