-Arkham Asylum-
As always, the security for Arkham was laughably bypassed. Canary had made it down into the holding cells with little problem. She walked down the hall, paying no attention to the multitude of villains that glared at her through their glass partitions. Poison Ivy sat in her bed, silently stroking a rose. Harley Quinn picked her nose and rubbed the result on the wall as Dinah passed her by. Two-Face continuously flipped his coin while in the cell next to him the Riddler flipped through a crossword puzzle book. Across the hall, one of them actually spoke.
“Hey, little bird! How about a song?” the Joker squealed as he pressed his cheek against the glass. Even the criminal element had heard of what had happened to Black Canary and in turn what had happened to her attackers. Some of the rogues had actually became fans of her and her acts in some sick way. To his dismay she completely ignored him and continued down the corridor.
In the corner at the end of the hall she found her target. Her gloved hand traced the name next to the door. Oliver Queen. The love of her life. Her old life. The light for that portion of the hall was burnt out, so his cell was cast in a shadow. She could make out his form, still wrapped in a straightjacket, huddled in the corner. With mere seconds of fiddling with the electronic control panel, the door slid up into the ceiling. She made not a sound as she entered the cell and looked down upon what was once a great man. Canary had no tricks or gimmicks for this kill. She pulled her dagger from her belt and readied it over his head. He turned to look at her, but instead of shock or shame, she was met with anger as he leapt at her. She flipped back and away as ‘Ollie’ ripped off his jacket to reveal Batman.
As if she had seen this possibility, she simply changes tactics and rushes forward. Batman blocked a solid roundhouse kick and was able to knock the dagger from her grasp. Undeterred, she landed a powerful palm thrust into the Caped Crusader’s face, knocking him backwards and almost breaking his nose.
“You don’t have to do this, Dinah!” he pleaded even as she grabbed him by his arm and flipped him over her shoulder and down the hall. He was able to turn his body in midair and land on his feet facing her.
“Holy crap!” the Joker exclaimed in excitement. He put his hands over his mouth and let out a muffled scream of joy as Canary flew past his cell and landed a kick to Batman’s stomach. “Kick him below the utility belt!” Joker cheered
Both combatants ignored him. Seeing no other choice, Bruce began to fight back in earnest. He caught one of her punches and answered with an uppercut. Instead of letting her fly, he kept hold of her wrist and went to deliver another. Canary suddenly fell and shifted her weight, allowing her to slide between his legs and pull him into a flip where he landed on his back. She kicked him in his face as she rolled back to her feet. Even as he got back up, she landed another hard kick to his face, sending him spiraling down the hallway.
“Harley!” Joker screamed.
“Yea, Mr. J!” the clown girl replied from down the way.
“Is it my birthday?!”
“No!”
“Find that calendar guy. Tell him this is my new birthday!” he ordered and jumped up and down and clapped furiously.
Bruce tossed several pellets between him and Canary. He hoped as they exploded in a smokescreen that it would give him the time he needed. He was wrong. Dinah leapt through the smoke right for him but he was able to fire his grapple line straight ahead. The line wrapped around her leg and yanked her out of the air. Even with such a struggle, he knew from her body language and fighting style that she was holding back. She didn’t want to fight him; she never had. But he still had to stop her.
“Please, Dinah. We can get you help. Those men weren’t innocent, but Ollie is,” he tried to convince her. “I know how hard it can be to seek revenge. But Oliver didn’t do this to you. He tried to save you!”
Green Arrow had tried to save her. But somehow, in the grand order of the cosmos, he was too late. Didn’t Bruce realize it how she was failed? To remind him, she tore off her mask and tossed it to the ground. Batman couldn’t suppress the look of pain and sadness that washed over his face. The left side of her mouth was sealed shut with scar tissue. There were scars all over her face from the torture and the lackluster attempt to repair the damage with surgery. Her dyed blonde hair was gone. In its place black tufts of hair were growing in various places around the scar tissue and skin grafts. One of her blue eyes was fogged over, hinting that she may had been blinded in that eye. She stared at Bruce with anger and betrayal.
“I’m so sorry,” was all he could say. Despite this, his hand reached behind him for a batarang. He might be convinced to let her go, but not if she killed Oliver.
Just as he grasped the projectile in his hand he was stopped by a blow to his head. He fell to ground and tried to refocus his vision. Standing over him was Ollie holding a fire extinguisher. “Leave her alone,” he said coldly. The extinguisher fell to the ground as he got his first look at Dinah. His heart broke into a million pieces and he fell to the ground. He crawled to her feet and covered her boots with his tears. “I’m so sorry,” he said over and over. “Failed you…” She said or did nothing. Dinah didn’t even look down at the man groveling at her feet. “I know why you’re here. I don’t deserve your forgiveness,” Ollie said as he tried to stop sobbing. “I just pray you can live a happy life after this. I forgive you, Dinah. You didn’t deserve this or me. I’m so sorry,” he wept and crawled to his feet to face her. If only he had made it there in time he might have been able to save her all of this. The grief he felt over it was killing him. He stayed by her bed in the hospital day and night. He only left for the first time after Clark had moved him to another room after he collapsed from exhaustion. Once he came to, Dinah was already gone. His sanity began to fade quickly after that as the guilt took over. He had failed the most important thing in the world to him and it was too much for one man to bear.
“Don’t try to stop her,” he begged Batman. He would do whatever it took to help Dinah become herself again. For the first time she felt something besides hate. But it was too late.
As Batman regained his senses, he felt something he hadn’t before hanging on his belt. He quickly recognized it as a JLA teleport beacon. It was at that instant he understood what was happening. Time seemed to slow as Dinah reached for a button mounted on a wristband. Bruce unconnected the beacon and latched it onto the back of Ollie’s color just as she activated her program. Days before she had hacked back into the JLA’s teleporter in preparation for what she had to do.
“No!!!” Ollie screamed as he quickly vanished in a flash of light. He appeared a mile down the road at the entrance gate to Arkham Asylum. With him were a dozen confused nurses and doctors that Dinah had also tagged with beacons. “Dinah!” Ollie screamed, but it was already too late.
In anger for his intrusion Dinah took a fighting stance before Bruce. But he refused to reciprocate. “He didn’t deserve to die, Dinah. He tried his hardest to help you. He still wishes to help you,” Bruce tried to explain as he walked closer to her. He slid off his belt and tossed it to the side as a sign of good faith. “He isn’t to blame for this and you know it. It’s me. It happened because you were loyal to me. I didn’t come look for you. I didn’t even notice it happened,” he admitted. “You were loyal to me after what they did and I couldn’t save you,” he said and slid back his cowl.
“Where the hell did Batman go?” Joker asked in amazement, only to be completely ignored.
Tears began to fall down Bruce’s face as he stepped up to stand directly in front of his friend. “Oliver didn’t fail you. I did.”
Dinah couldn’t hold back her emotions as the truth became known to her. She dropped her stance and just began pounding on Bruce’s chest out of pure, overwhelming emotion. She began to silently weep, for the first time letting out the feelings she held in for all those months. He simply held her until she stopped struggling and went limp in his arms. Dinah Laurel Lance would never find out if Bruce knew what was coming. But Ollie would be able to live his life now and hopefully move on. Canary took in a deep breath. Her last breath. Her lips trembled as she said her final word. “Goodbye.”
The pure sonic force ricocheted instantly around the walls of the asylum. Bruce held onto her even as blood began to pour from their ears and eyes. The first word she had spoken in months was being echoed back over and over. The inmates began to scream as the sonic death wail began to liquefy them. The walls shook and glass shattered as the intensity reached its apex. Ollie and the doctors a mile down the road grasped their ears as the shockwave erupted and knocked them to their knees. He screamed his love’s name as he heard her say goodbye and again his heart broke.
