Bruce sat at his desk as his computer ran every test he had on the origami bird the killer had left behind. He had been in the cave for almost a full day, trying to figure out what he should do. He slid off his cowl and pinched the bridge with two of his fingers. He hated being bested by anyone, although he was loath to admit such primal concerns. Behind him Alfred was replacing the caste for Tim’s broken hand. The night before he had given him a temporary splint and had to wait a full day for the swelling to go down enough for a more permanent solution. Robin was obviously ashamed and still taken aback by what had occurred. The other murders were also gruesome, but nothing of that caliber.
“There, Master Tim. That should heal up in no time, good as new,” Alfred promised as he began to clean up his medical supplies.
“Thanks, Alfred,” replied Tim wearily as he rose from the examination table. He cautiously approached Bruce who was obviously a bit flustered. This case was getting to him far more than any before it. “She should be finished now. Maybe we should just let her be?”
Batman flashed Tim a look of shame, shock, and anger. He should have known better. Friend or foe, killers had to be brought in and she was no exception.
“What do we do now?”
“We find her,” Bruce stated without even looking up from his machines.
“But how?” Tim wondered. “Savant was the last one. How are we going to find her now?”
“One would think. But if she was going to stop with him, why tell us to stay out of her way?” Batman said, urging Tim to think about it.
“She’s going to kill again.”
“Yes,” Batman said as he slid his cowl back over his face and practically leapt out of his chair. Robin tried his best to keep up with his mentor as he ran towards the Batmobile.
“Bruce, wait for me!”
Tim didn’t get a response until Batman had leapt into the driver’s seat. “I’m sorry, Tim. You can’t be there for this,” he said before speeding out of the Batcave. Robin started to rush to his motorcycle, but stopped as he realized that Bruce was right. Whatever had to be done, he couldn’t be a part of it. Things had escalated to a place where decisions had been forced to be made. He couldn’t help but be angry that she would force Bruce to make those decisions.
“Master Tim?” Alfred called as he approached the teen. “I may not be privy to all the details of your mission, but I can tell when things are not the norm.”
Tim let out a heavy sigh as he turned to Alfred and took off his domino mask. “You’re right, Alfred. Things have never been like this.”
“One would assume it has something to do with the culprit in question?”
“Yea,” Tim agreed as he and Alfred started to walk back towards the core of the cave and the stairs leading back up into the mansion. “I think Bruce just looks at it as another villain. But I just can’t. After what they did to her, how can we not empathize with her need for justice?”
“Justice or revenge, sir?”
“That too. Either way, it is hard for me to side with them over her. Dinah was a hero, Alfred. And those men held her captive for days, torturing her almost to the brink of death. She was found practically bonded with a mattress with her own sweat and blood. It was a miracle she even survived at all,” explained Robin.
“That poor girl.”
“After months in the hospital she simply vanished. Days later the first murder occurred.” Robin sat down and began to take off his uniform.
“Why have you and Master Bruce been unable to apprehend her?” Alfred wondered.
“She was tortured because they wanted Batman’s secret identity. Even after all they did to her, she didn’t crack. She didn’t betray her friend. I’m sure Bruce blames himself somehow for not being able to help her. With that aside, Black Canary was always a world class fighter. Even before the incident she probably could have beaten Bruce in a fight. But now she’s different. She knows how Bruce thinks enough to plan around him. Somehow she’s been able to completely avoid any direct confrontation with us. I never knew Dinah was so capable. She was a born leader and a great strategist, but when a hero is forced over that line, I suppose there is no way to gauge what they could become.”
“I see. I have often worried the same thing would happen to Master Bruce. After his parents’ death, he was so occupied with revenge. One would think he could empathize with her, but his sense of justice is conflicting with that.”
“I hope tonight isn’t that night, Alfred. I know where both he and Dinah are going. Who she’s going to kill. I’m afraid that in Arkham tonight, one of them will die.”
