“Lion” my instincts sharpen, my blood lust fuelled by my own experiences at these people’s hands rages within me, I could tear his head clean off, worst still I feel like I want to; almost excited at the thought. “Please don’t, you have to understand. This was just a job interview, I didn’t know what is was for until I took up employment. I just get daily tasks and if I perform them I get to go home to my wife” “Why should I care?” I move closer and for a second I really believe I’m going to kill him. “NO WAIT” his hands wave in front of me, giving me the chance to centre my thoughts. “Speak and make it fast” “Waller was making some sort of weapon, one to counter all Meta-humans” “She’s rebuilding the OMAC’s?” “No, not machines this time, human weapons” “Like the ultra-men?” “Better than that, a unique genetic template, multi adaptive with a DNA helix containing more genetic material than anything on earth” ”What are you saying?” “A human, a real damn human with more natural abilities than Superman, you can’t stop Waller now. Not even the people she was working for could stop her, they tried but she went to Lex Luthor for help” “How do I stop the weapon?” my voice trembles all totems have long since left me, for now I’m just plain Mari, his words fill me with fear. Because I’ve worked with Waller, I know what she’s capable of and now it appears she has the ultimate weapon with which to wage war against all those who turned against her. “You can’t stop her, the weapon already faced and took down Super Girl, and the entire league wouldn’t be enough to stop her, not now” “We’ll see about that, now how the hell do I get out of here?” The bullet that pierces his chest rings off the metal floor; I look deep in to his eyes as his body fights the shock of a piece of metal piercing his heart. His eyes widen with fear as death comes to claim him, blood seeps along his white coat as red warm liquid chokes his mouth, finally he hits the floor joining the metal bullet that killed him. “I’m afraid that’s one question you’re never going to learn the answer to” I look up and see her, Waller standing so tall. A small smile sits upon her face cause she believes she’s already won. But sometimes I think she forgets just how varied the animal kingdom is. “Bat” I take to the air and use echolocation to map my surroundings beyond anything my eyes could tell me. I begin to see an exit, and from the look on Waller’s face, she knows I know it. The guards begin to fill the air with beams of heat; I change winged beasts and instead turn to the hawk diving with all the speed I can muster, changing to the wolf as I land. With claw and teeth I make my escape and begin to charge forward making ground towards the surface and my exit. “Should we go after her?” “No activate sleeper unit one, its time we see how the new phase of experiments match up to the original” “Understood” Waller’s smile slowly returns as she watches the view screen that shows my every move. “This time there will be no mercy” ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Five Minutes Later: ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ The guards aren’t even trying to stop me anymore. Instead I pour on the speed and rush out towards the surface. Finally I’m in open air and I take a deep breath and call upon the salamander to help heal my aching body. Looking around I soon realise its nighttime, surrounded by buildings of all different sizes, each one connected to the other. A billion dollar enterprise all designed to hunt down and kill people like me. I tap the communicator held inside my totem and try to contact J’onn; in response all I hear is static, some kind of dampening field blocking my transmission. Simple enough, I just have to get outside its range, once more I take to the air and begin to reach altitude, around me I manage to catch a glimpse of the sheer scope of this complex. Moving higher I begin to start retrying my communication device and for a second I almost hear a response. Suddenly the air around my turns thick, spinning and swirling, caught in its pull I find myself powerless to stop the freefall. Instead I call upon the T-rex and hop it softens the landing. Upon impact I manage to see my attacker, a girl, wind sweeps across her body like a dress, an elemental force given form. My impact cracks the ground like a missile; a cloud of dust and pavement rises up before settling down upon my skin like hot ash. “DAMN IT” I scream to myself just to know that I survived, I feel the blood in my mouth and spit it freely upon the ground. Looking forward I’m forced to witness a display of power. As the young girl no older than twenty-one, rips apart the cloud of dust so that there is almost an instant of tranquillity. Its short-lived as the same power suddenly begins wiping at me, the dust feels like shards of glass against my skin. But the armoured form of T-rex saves me now as it did a minute ago. Instead I plant my feet and brace myself against the ever-increasing winds. “We Don’t have to fight” I scream at high pitch trying to break the winds howl. “I do as I am told to do” “Eagle” I use her winds currents and ride them fast, like a bullet I move away, but escape is not my plan. As anticipated she changes the winds direction pulling me towards her an amazing pace. “Condor” the tilt and wind speeds increase my momentum to almost two hundred miles per hour. “Elephant” the weight of the animal I call upon second holds my direction and speed. I slow down a little as she tries to prevent my attack, but at these speeds and weight she doesn’t stand a chance. I land on top of her hard and feel the air as it strip’s away from her lungs, at least one rib cracks and still I feel her struggle. “Don’t even bother little girl, right now theirs a whole elephant sitting on your chest, so unless you want it to be a whale I’d stop all this struggling” “I can still beat you, I’ll… I’ll strip away all the oxygen” Suddenly a cyclone whips around us both, a tempest of howling winds and dust, I struggle to breath as if an invisible assailant at two hands wrapped tightly around my neck. “Stop this” “I can’t, it’s what I was born to do” “It doesn’t have to be” I look hard in to her eyes as we’re both struggling for breath and I see the grimed determination. She’s out to prove herself and is prepared to die to that end. As we sit here in the silent void all I can do is ask myself if I’m prepared to kill this innocent in order to break free, worst still what else has Luthor and Waller created down in these buildings.
