Several street thugs were zooming around the street like junky versions of the Flash. They had interrupted a very nice Chinese dinner between friends and coworkers. Unlucky for them, those friends were also superheroes. Dinah acted first and unleashed her Canary Cry, temporarily blasting all the thugs backwards and leaving them stunned.
“What are we dealing with, GL?” she asked, instantly switching into hero mode.
Hal Jordon nodded as his ring manifested his uniform. He pointed the most powerful weapon in the universe at the group of troublemakers and an emerald light shone upon them. This energy scanned the thugs and gave Green Lantern information on what they were. “They’re humans, but there is something in their bloodstream. Some chemical or effect I don’t have in my ring’s database,” he explained. “I would wager that would be what is giving them their super speed.”
“Great. So we contain them in hopes it will wear off,” Dinah said. “Ted, you and Dick can stay back. We don’t need anyone asking questions if they spot you two fighting out here,” she urged.
“Like hell,” Ted argued.
“My suit is in the car,” Dick added.
“No time. Here,” Green Lantern said and this time shined his ring on his friends. The usual evening wear of Dick Grayson, Ted Kord, and Dinah Lance vanished in place of Green Lantern uniforms complete with a mask to hide their identity. Ted’s was complete with his air gun while Dick’s had twin eskrima sticks attached. “Best I can do,” he said with a smile.
Canary looked over to see the super quick villains already rising to their feet. “More than ample, GL. Alright, take them down before they hurt anyone else,” ‘Green’ Canary said and climbed out of the broken restaurant window.
“Green Lantern, try to raise Oracle on her cell. Check on them and tell her to see what she can find,” ‘Green’ Beetle said.
“On it. I can multitask,” Hal said with a smile as he took to the air.
Despite Dinah’s head start, Nightwing got to the group before she did. The largest member of the group was still struggling to shake off the effects of Dinah’s Canary Cry and Dick planned on capitalizing. He took one of his eskrimas and hurled it at his target’s temple. Unfortunately, the rest of the gang was up and running, literally. A teenage girl with short red hair rushed in front of her teammate and caught the weapon with ease. “Well that wasn’t very nice. Since when does a Green Lantern throw sticks at people?” she asked with a wicked smile.
By that time Canary had made her way over and attempted a flying kick on the girl but it was easily avoided by someone with such speed. “What’s with you and redheads?” Dinah reprimanded. “Take the big one,” she said, flashing him a reassuring smile that she was only joking. He reminded her a great deal of Connor. Someone who was usually very serious except in random moments when they were a complete jester. They both also found it difficult at times to view sarcasm from someone they viewed with respect. It was very endearing.
Nightwing nodded and rushed ahead to switch targets with her. At the same time, Beetle had his sites on a tall, skinny man with a shaved head. He rushed at him but the man simply sped around him and kicked Ted in the small of the back. He somewhat clumsily fell into a front roll before standing back up and facing his opponent again.
“What’s your problem man? We were just asking that guy a couple of questions,” the man asked.
“Was that before or after you blew up that car and almost killed everyone in that restaurant?” Ted said in anger.
“Um…during?” the man replied with a confused smile. “Anyway, we have more important things to do than mess with some gimped Green Lanterns,” he said and pulled out the gun he had used before. Remarkably Ted pulled his green air gun and fired before the thug could get off a shot. To his amazement an emerald cyclone came forth as he pulled the trigger and propelled the speedster into the side of the restaurant and into unconsciousness.
With him in the air, there was no way for the other unarmed thugs to even touch Green Lantern. At least that was what he thought. Hence his surprise when one sped up a fire escape out of sight and leapt down on top of him. A few dozen punches and Hal was dazed and slowly falling towards the street below. With his concentration lapsing, the others noticed their costumes starting to fade. Dinah looked away from her opponent to find her date in peril as the last unaccounted for thug was assaulting him. She screamed at Beetle who looked over in time to see her rushing towards him. “Give me a boost!” she yelled. Ted barely had time to link his fingers together before Canary stepped in his hands and was pushed into the air. The impact knocked Ted on his bottom but from that vantage point he watched as Dinah flipped over Hal’s head and grabbed the speedster that was still on his back. With her arms wrapped around the man’s neck, she whispered something in his ear. A look of fear appeared on his face as he reluctantly let go. Both he and Dinah fell from GL and plummeted towards the street. At the last moment she shifted her weight so that she was on top of the thug and landed on top of him with a thud. “Ouch.”
“You’re insane!” Ted said laughing as he ran to check on her.
“I know. I can’t be a good role model if I keep doing things like that,” she said, also laughing as her friend helped her to her feet.
“Thanks,” Hal said as he flew past. The red head that was Dinah’s opponent was dashing around, dodging Green Lantern’s energy blasts. Her confidence grew as she kept avoiding his attempts to zap her. If she had taken the time to think about it, she might have remembered that Hal was a member of the Justice League. No one who was a member of that team for as long as Hal was untrained in super speed fighting tactics; and he was taught from the best. She found herself maneuver between a wall and a taxi. With another energy blast coming at her, she had no choice but to run backwards. To her dismay she ran right into a green box that sealed her in. Luckily it was sound proof so that the heroes couldn’t hear the series of cuss words that were spewed at them. Unluckily, the fight was not over.
Nightwing flew past them but gracefully and almost impossibly flipped in midair to land on his feet. He skidded to a stop, using both feet and one hand while the other hand grasped his weapon. “We miscounted,” he said calmly as the others looked over to see the large one Nightwing was fighting along with two others. Before they could even blink Hal was slammed back into the restaurant. His constructs quickly began to fade and the ones they had defeated broke free. A few super speed punched and kicks left the other three down on their hands and knees.
“Another time perhaps,” the largest thug said. “Let’s go. We’re late,” he said before dashing away with his cohorts right behind him.
“Did I mention ouch?” Dinah said as she slowly rose to a standing position.
“Let’s regroup and check on Hal,” Ted said, already crawling back into the restaurant.
