-----={Sin Tzu’s Chinese Buffet}=-----
“Mel, this is Hal Jordon and Dinah Lance. Guys, this is Melody Case,” Ted says, introducing everyone.
“Very nice to meet both of you,” she said and held out her hand.
Dinah smiles as she shakes her hand, “You as well.”
I help Barbara from the car and act as a brace for her as she lifts herself into the nearby wheelchair. We slowly walk up as the others finish getting acquainted. I grin and point at Ted, “Now don’t start without us.”
“And this is Dick Grayson and Barbara Gordon,” Ted says as we get closer. He looks at the two of us and motions to his friend, “Please meet Melody Chase.”
Barbara takes her hand, shaking it with a warm smile plastered on her face, “It’s a pleasure.”
With the introductions out of the way, we all make our way into the restaurant and sit in a nice big booth that Ted had saved for us. It isn’t long before the waitress comes to our table and asks for our orders. Dinah orders a small collection of different foods followed by Hal who orders enough egg rolls for the entire green lantern corp. Barbara orders next, asking for the General Cho’s Chicken. I whistle, shaking my head at her, “Much too spicy for my tastes.”
She looks at me annoyed at my mocking of her food choice, “This coming from the guy who has dated every red head from here to New York?”
Everyone at the table laughs and I return my attention to the menu. I scroll through the different selections of chicken and stop on one of my old favorites. My gaze falls on the waitress who smiles at me, “I’m going to try the sesame chicken and rice.”
The waitress nods and moves on the Ted and Melody as my attention wanes. I find myself starring at Barbara and her amazing outfit. She looks so amazing. If only there was a way I could know how she truly feels.
“So how did you guys meet?”
Melody looks around the table with a goofy grin on her face. We all look to Ted for answers, but he’s as clueless as the rest of us. I wonder just how much she knows about all of us. Hal and Dinah look at one another before finally breaking the silence, “Well, Dinah and I met through a mutual friend.” Hal takes the chore away from Dinah.
“And we met Ted through Babs here,” Dinah says, picking it up.
“Oh really?” Mel asked, now completely interested.
“Oh sure. They’re both into all that techno-nerd stuff. She’s consulted him and vice-versa, blah blah blah,” Dinah said before looking a little embarrised.
“Dinah and Babs are best friends,” Hal said, taking the conversation back, but steering it in another direction.
I took this opportunity to slide my own side of the story into place, “I’ve known Babs since I was a kid, we kind of grew up together.” I look at her and smile, unable to take my eyes off of her, “She introduced me to Ted and eventually we ended up as partners. Just recently my father’s company merged with Ted’s, and so now we get to see one another all the time.”
“Oh wow. So you’re the prodigal son of Bruce Wayne? Ted has told me a little about working with Mr. Wayne,” Melody replies with renewed interest.
I laugh and grin at Ted, “All good things I hope.”
“Absolutely,” She turns her attention to Hal and Dinah who have already begun to stuff their faces. “So what do you two do? Do you also work with Ted?”
“Us? Oh no,” Dinah said after choking down her food. “I run Sherwood Florist here in town,” she said proudly.
“Oh, I’ve been there. It’s very lovely,” Mel said.
Dinah begins to glow with pride before pointing to her date, “Thanks. And Hal here is a test pilot.”
“Oh really?” Mel asked, completely shocked by such a bizarre profession.
Hal gets that look on his face, and I know its coming. It isn’t long before he’s telling some of his best stories to the new girl of the group. I take the opportunity to start eating dinner. Soon I’m feeling rather full, and Hal has wrapped up his final story. I look at Barbara and point to her food, “So how’s the spicy food, hot stuff?”
She rolls her eyes at me, “It’s not that bad ya wuss.”
“That reminds me of that one time we were in the garage! You remember what I’m talking about Babs?”
Ted begins to describe the situation to Barbara and the rest of us just stare at them confused. It isn’t long they are both laugh so hard that they are in tears. The rest of us try our best to figure out what is so funny, but all we can muster is feeling awkward about the whole thing.
Dinah looks out the window, while Hal continues to stuff his face. While Ted and Barbara are busy laughing I look at Melody and try to ease the moment for us, “So what is it that you do? We don’t really know that much about you.”
Before she can answer, an explosion goes off near the restaurant, drawing my attention away from the conversation. I hear the glass shatter and immediately jump in front of Barbara to shield her. With my eyes closed tightly, I hold her in my arms and wait for the coming pain. To my surprise I feel nothing hit my back, and turn to see that Hal has erected a shield to protect us all. He uses his power ring to lower a large manhole cover onto the table, squashing the remainder of dinner.
“Is anyone hurt?” Dinah asked as she climbed up off the ground.
“I don’t think so,” Mel asked, obviously confused.
“Mel, get Babs and the other guests outside through the kitchen,” Ted ordered, quickly taking charge.
Mel remained concerned and unsure of what was occurring, “What about the rest of you?”
“Just hurry,” Ted asked and gave her a look that let her know he wasn’t playing around.
I look at Barbara and mouth ‘be careful’ to her. She nods and points back at me. We all look out the window where a gang of punks are causing mayhem. To our surprise they are running around as if empowered by the speed force. I look at Ted and the others follow my gaze. He loosens his necktie and looks back at us all, “Alright. We have work to do.”
