-That Night-
In quite the opposite fashion of her best friend, Dinah simply went to her closet and picked out whatever she felt like wearing. She chose a simple, shoulder-less, white, one-piece dress with neck straps. She wore a pair of white heels and went with a basic, natural make up. Her blonde hair was twisted into a bun and held in place with two hair sticks. She had just finished when there was a knock on the door. She answered it to find Hal there. He wore a gray silver suit with a green tie. It was hard not to find him attractive. Both he and Dinah appeared much younger than their years. He from his time as the Specter and she from the Lazarus Pits.
“You look great,” he said as he presented a pink rose that he began to pin to her dress.
“This isn’t prom, Hal,” she said with an embarrassed giggle. It still felt a little weird not being with Ollie, but being with friends was good comfort.
“Consider it free advertising. I did get it from your shop,” he bragged.
“Well in that case,” she said, smiling at him.
“So shall we take your car? I kind of…flew here,” he admitted sheepishly.
“You know I don’t have a car. Not since Sin…,” she started to say, but couldn’t bring herself to lie to him. But people had to believe she was dead so no one would search for her adopted daughter.
“I understand. So I shall be your driver for the evening,” he said. His ring sparked to life and in seconds his suit was replaced with his Green Lantern uniform. He walked over to her terrace and opened the window. A green platform appeared on which he stepped up on and reached back with his hand outstretched. “Ready?”
“More than,” she said and with his help climbed up onto the construct. Although she was loath to admit it, Dinah still giggled like a school girl inside any time she flew without a plane. She often wished that would have been her metahuman ability. But meeting people like Flash, Batman, and Ollie…
Her thoughts were broken up by the sudden jolt of movement as they flew over Gotham City. It was hard to see anything to love about the city during the day, but at night it almost came alive. Despite the crime, the crazy, and the weather, Gotham was her home.
“You really love it here, don’t you?” Hal asked as he caught a glimpse of her face.
“I do. I always thought it was kind of corny, with heroes having their hometowns and turf to protect, but now I understand.”
“Me too,” Hal said with a sad smile. It was clear he was still upset about Coast City, but now wasn’t the time to pry. She just put her hand on his forearm and leaned against him.
“Ya big softy,” she joked and jabbed him in the ribs softly with her elbow.
“Look who’s talking.”
The two landed in an alley and Hal quickly unsummoned his uniform. They were joking and laughing as they turned the corner into the front of the restaurant. Ted and Mel were already there, looking very much in love. He waved them over in his big, dorky way, immediately making Dinah smile even more.
“Mel, this is Hal Jordon and Dinah Lance. Guys, this is Melody Case,” Ted Kord said.
“Very nice to meet both of you,” she said and held out her hand.
“You as well,” Dinah said as she and Hal shook her hand.
“Now don’t start without us,” Dick said as he walked up, pushing Bab’s wheelchair.
“And this is Dick Grayson and Barbara Gordon,” Ted said. “Please meet Melody Chase.”
“It’s a pleasure,” they said as they exchanged greetings.
The six of them headed inside where they sat at a table Ted had reserved. The place was immersed in Chinese culture, reminding Dinah of the many places she went to train in the Orient. After the others had ordered, she herself settled on the kung pao shrimp, a pair of egg rolls, and some wonton soup. Hal on the other hand ordered enough egg rolls to gag Giganta.
“So how did you all meet?” Mel finally asked. Dinah and Hal weren’t exactly sure what she knew or didn’t know, so they decided to play it safe.
“Well, Dinah and I met through a mutual friend,” Hal said, taking that chore away from Dinah.
“And we met Ted through Babs here.”
“Oh really?” Mel asked, now completely interested.
“Oh sure. They’re both into all that techno-nerd stuff. She’s consulted him and vice-versa, blah blah blah,” Dinah said before finally realizing to shut her yap.
“Dinah and Babs are best friends,” Hal said, picking the conversation back up but steering it in another direction. Dinah just nodded and shoved one of Hal’s egg rolls into her mouth whole to prevent her from being tempted to speak.
“That’s great. So what do you two do?” Mel asked. “Do you work with Ted?”
“Us? Oh no,” Dinah said after choking down her food. I run Sherwood Florist here in town,” she said proudly.
“Oh, I’ve been there. It’s very lovely,” Mel said.
“Thanks. And Hal here is a test pilot.”
“Oh really?” Mel asked, completely shocked by such a bizarre profession. They were all listening to Hal talk about one of his daring new planes when Dinah noticed some type of commotion outside through the window. Some thugs were bothering some other, small thug about something. If only she had Clark’s hearing. She was starting to get concerned enough to leave when she saw the thugs start darting around like Flash on crack. She stood up as the smaller thug pulled out a gun and started firing. The gun was silenced, so no one inside heard it, but she certainly noticed. In his attempt to shoot the speedsters, the thug landed a few bullets in a car that quickly exploded. This sound everyone heard, but not in time to do anything. The first thing she saw was a manhole cover get dislodged and fly towards them like a killer Frisbee.
“Everyone down. Hal!” she ordered as she tackled Mel and Ted. Hal looked over just in time to see it break through the glass. He erected his energy armor underneath his suit and deflected the manhole cover into the floor of the restaurant.
“Is anyone hurt?” Dinah asked as she climbed up off the ground.
“I don’t think so,” Mel asked, obviously confused.
“Mel, get Babs and the other guests outside through the kitchen,” Ted ordered, quickly taking charge.
“What about the rest of you?”
“Just hurry,” Ted asked and gave her a look that let her know he wasn’t playing around. When only Hal, Dick, Dinah and Ted were left in the front, they looked out the window to the speedsters still running around and screaming in delight at the carnage. “Alright. We have work to do.”
