"Are you sure this is nice enough?" I take my eyes off of the soaked Gotham cityscape. The lights glimmer off of the rain drops, they kinda look like stars. I look over at Mel, who stands across from me. I think this is the most nervous that I've ever seen her, usually it's the other way around. This is the most time I've spent in this apartment since Bruce and I entered into our merger. Forgot how nice this place is.
"You look great." I walk towards her and take her hand, placing it in mine. She's dressed in a blue gown, not to dressy but definitely not casual either. Makes my sports coat and jeans look completely out of place, I think it might be time I got some new clothes. Her hair is up tonight, she says it makes her look slimmer I tell her she's beautiful no matter what. As the lights catch her I realize that she's still as radiant as she was in Rip's Time Sphere, the colors that had swirled around her then seem like they never left her side.
"I mean I feel like I should be in a costume or something." She winks and smiles as she pulls me closer to her, grasping my hand tightly. She's playing with me; at least I'm calming her nerves. Her lips are soft, as she presses them against mine.
For a minute I forget that we're supposed to meet the others in twenty minutes; tonight she gets to meet my friends. Right now I'm tempted to call the whole thing off and just order in. She's spent the last week worrying that they won't like her; I keep telling her they'll probably like her more then me.
"Maybe later we can work on that costume thing." I reply as she pulls away, still close enough that I can feel her breathe on my face. I think that I could get used to this whole happiness thing. I hear my cell ring but I don't bother to answer. It's probably Gina or Betty either way it means I'd have to work tonight.
"Maybe you should answer that..." I reluctantly let go as she pulls away, sauntering over to the mirror to check her make up and lipstick. I think this is the fourth or fifth time that she's done it.
"They're going to like you just fine." I walk towards my phone, and check the Caller ID. The number is an encrypted a series of zeroes and ones. Checkmate. They've been trying to get in touch with me for the last month. I told them I'm done, they don't seem think so. They said they'd give me some time off to figure everything out, said they owed me that much. I said that it was over, yet another break-up that the other party has yet to get the message.
"Who was it?" I think she's finally ready, as she presses the sides of her dress once more getting the wrinkles out.
"No one. Just Betty checking in, looks like a slow night just a robbery on Michigan..." If she's taking this secret identity thing poorly she sure is hiding it well. I think Betty being Lady Bug was a bigger shock then me being The Blue Beetle.
"She'll be fine." She smiles picking up her matching purse, it to is blue. "You've been working with her after all."
They're she goes making me feel like Superman again. A part of me wishes that she wouldn't, that after everything I put her through she wouldn't think of me like that, the hiding, keeping secrets, the lying she didn't deserve any of it. She deserves better, and this time I'm going to do things right.
"So tell me more about this place?" I stick out my arm as she wraps her around it, resting her head on my shoulder.
"Well it's got some of the best Chinese food this side of Beijing. Barbara and I found it one night while I was out on patrol."
"And Barbra is?"
"A friend, just like Dick, Dinah and Hal." I want to tell her more but these aren't my secret tell. Plus she's smart and will probably figure it out eventually. "They're some of the best, and they'll love you and if they don't well, that is there lose."
"You always say the right things on dates?" She asks are the elevator doors close.
"I think that this might be a first." I smile, as I press the button for the lobby, soon we begin our descent. I think this is going to be good evening.
