"Hold!" Sergeant William Richardson shouts to his men as the enemy fire begins to intensify. "Do not give them any ground!"
"Sir, yes sir!" The marines that surround him do as they are ordered. They're his men, he's responsible for them, and he's going to be the one that gets them killed. The Bialyian rebels have been pushing on their position for the last 36 hours.
"Any word from command?" Crouching he scurries over towards the back of the small cave that has become their makeshift home.
"No sir. There's a strange static interfering with all communication. I don't think commands coming." The Radio Officer, Jesup, is young no older then Richardson's own son. He's shaking probably a combination of fear, exhaustion and dehydration.
"Keep trying." He turns away from Jesup knowing that it's all been futile, no one is coming. They're not even supposed to be here, a simple recon mission into the nation of Bialya in search of a rebel encampment. As Richardson stares at the men towards the front of the cave a burst of light shines in the distance, like a flare on the horizon.
"Sir, looks like we've got something incoming." One of the marines at the front howlers, the light from whatever it is, makes it hard for Richardson to identify the marine.
"Everyone get to back and brace yourselves, it looks like they're sending in the heavies." Richardson orders, taking a tighter grip on his M-16. Richardson presses his back against the cold wall of the cave; the object is getting faster as it approaches, faster then any missile he's even seen.
"Make you're piece now." He feels the cave shake but doesn't feel any explosion. No dust or debris; instead he hears silence, the rebels have stopped firing. Cautiously he raises his hand, his men all take up positions behind him as they make their way towards the front of the cave. The sun is high in the afternoon sky, their are a few clouds but they are scattered. Richardson sees the rebels hands behind their heads, weapons on the ground.
"Heard you needed some help Sergeant." His voice barely sounds human anymore, hell he's barely human anymore; he hasn't been in a long time.
"I didn't think anyone was coming." Richardson breathes a sigh of relief as he gives the all clear to the rest of his men. "Gentlemen, I think we owe our backup a salute." The marines stand at attention joining Richardson in gazing up at the men who had saved their lives. Former Air Force Pilot Nathaniel Adam, known to people all over the world as Captain Atom. The Dulisteel armor that holds him together glimmers in the afternoon sun as another round of bullets rain on the squad.
"No man behind." He smiles, as he floats to the ground. "The boys in Washington want to have a word with you about what you found."
"Glad I can deliver it in person." The bullet hums as curses through the air, and hits Sergeant Richardson's throat, the Sergeant gasps for a minute before falling over to the ground.
"Secure those men in the cave go as far back as you possibly can. GO NOW!" Captain Atom immediately takes command as he searches the hills for the sniper. How could he have missed him? He watches as the remaining marines move the prisoners into the cave as more bullets begin whiz through the sky like a deadly hail storm. These men trust him now, he doesn't know them, they barely know him but they're in his care now, his responsibility. He checks his back and makes sure the men are inside of the cave before raising his arm and firing a quantum blast at the entrance dirt and rock fall covering the entrance.
"I'm sorry Sergeant.” Atom takes the air and scouring the hillside for the sniper, closing his eyes he expands the quantum field around him, allowing him to see across spectrums; UV, Infra-Red, X-Ray, all at once, until he spots the assassin. Putting his palms together he fires a blast, taking out the entire hillside in a single powerful explosion.
He can feel the bullets hit him, they bounce off of his skin, ricocheting in all directions. He laughs a little to himself as he fires another blast of quantum energy.
*BOOM*
He feels the rush as a wave, washes over him. Something is wrong, this isn't right, he watches as his steel gray armor becomes golden with streaks of red emitting from it. He begins to fall towards the ground, unable to stop himself; the impact is enough to kill anybody else.
As he opens his eyes he stares at the lifeless body of Sergeant Richardson, flies having already begun to settle on it. Atom watches as the skin from the Sergeants body begins to burn, he tries to get up and move but he can't. He can feel it happening, the energy within his body is becoming too much for the containment suit.
"I'm sorry...." He tries to apologize to the late Sergeant as he begins to reach critical mass. The light is only hot for a minute as it begins to expand out from his body. He screams out, at least he tries instead more energy explodes from his body, it spills over like water gushing out of a faucet. The men in the cave our trapped, he regrets dooming them all in his final moments.
As the light fades a five mile crater sits, in place of the mountain and hillside that had stood for thousands of years.
