A few minutes later
“We’re almost there, but I don’t think we can avoid being spotted,” Sam says. He holds Steve under the arms as the two of them glide through the air. Up ahead is the embassy that is surrounded by police as well as several different federal agencies. With Moon Knight and Deadpool already moving into position below, it was time for Cap and Falcon to make their entrance.
“Take us a bit higher and I’ll drop,” Steve replies.
“Do you want to break a leg before we even get started?”
“No, I’ll just find one of them to break my fall,” Steve answers. Falcon angles up making them now 20 or more feet off the rooftop level. He glides towards the roof and the pair make out two men on the front and another two on the back. Each man is armed with an assault rifle as they peer over the edge. Steve nods towards one on the back of the building and Sam glides that direction. With a touch on Sam’s elbow, Cap signals the drop.
Steve drops with his legs tucked and his right arm reaching for his shield. Before Cap hits the ground he slings his shield to the other corner of the roof. It strikes the guard stationed there right in the back of the head and drops him. Cap continues on target and hits the other man feet first, knocking him to the ground. Cap quickly drills the man in the jaw with a fist. Reaching his right hand up, he snags his shield as it spins back to him.
Steve turns to the front of the building were he sees Sam slamming a vicious knee into the jaw of one of the other guards. Looking to the left, he can see that the other one is already neutralized. A small cheer can be heard from below as the two make their way to the center of the roof.
“That’s not good,” Sam says. “We’re going to have to get moving and fast.”
“The vent for the central air is right over here. Let’s just hope they didn’t have time to modify the security system.”
“Or set any traps.”
“Captain Winghead come in” Deadpool’s voice whispers over the com link.
“Go ahead,” Cap answers.
“There seems to be a little more activity going on here in the basement than we anticipated.”
“Like what,” Cap asks.
“There is some sort of bomb down here and it appears to be intended to disperse a biological agent. I can take a shot at disarming this because a timer has already started…”
Meanwhile
“This just in” Tom Brokaw says as the news breaks in over regular programming. “We have been trying to keep our viewing audience up to speed with the events going on at the Jaizhong embassy this evening. Sometime after 7pm a group of heavily armed men entered the embassy. Once inside they took the workers inside hostage and barricaded themselves inside.”
“Up until now information has been very scarce. The kidnappers have kept contact with the authorities outside to a minimum to the best of our knowledge. At 10:17 this evening a taped statement was sent to our studio over the internet from the embassy. The content of this video may be disturbing and even objectionable to some of our viewers but in the interest of delivering the news we present this.”
The screen fades to black and when an image appears it is grainier. The image is of Ambassador Lao sitting behind a desk with the Chinese flag as a background. Two men in black paramilitary uniforms and red berets stand to either side with assault rifles. The ambassador is sweating and shakes slightly as he reaches down and picks up a single piece of paper and begins to read.
“I am reading a prepared statement from the Crimson Path. Long has the western world attempted to meddle in the affairs of China and other eastern countries. Now under the guise of trade and friendship you have come like thieves in the night. Defiling our nation and our right to choose how we live. Inciting a province full of farmers to rebel by sending powered cowards who hide behind masks to lead them.”
“We of the Crimson Path have taken an oath to resist these western incursions. Our very way of life is not for sale to the capitalist swine who have invaded out country. We will hold these hostages until such time as the two unidentified mutants who led this rebellion surrender themselves to us at this location. Any attempt to breach this building will lead to the death of every hostage.” With that, the screen goes black…
