-----={The Cave}=------
A shiver runs down my spine as I quietly enter the barren and deserted Batcave. Even with the most up-to-date, high end technology available to man or alien, the one thing that remains untouched is a simple heating and air system. I often wonder if it might help Bruce’s mood to have a little breeze blowing through here once in a while. With fall coming in full swing the cave has already begun to grow cooler, despite it’s relation to the earth’s core.
I gently rub my hands along my arms as I make my way over to the main computer and take a seat. Waving my hands over the interface, I pull up our backend connection to the GCPD criminal records database and begin searching for the young Captain Boomerang. I’m surprised to find little information on him. Expanding the search, I sync up with outside sources, in hopes of finding something on my new adversary.
Again I find little to no information on the kid and my frustration begins to get the better part of me. I change my approach and decide to instead search for information on his true identity. Tapping into an FBI database I pull all of his records, including family history, and associates past. My concern over letting him go is quickly removed as I flip through the paper work. Outside of a few minor problems at school for fighting, the kid is surprisingly clean.
His file denotes him as being George Owen Mercer, son of Lisa Star Mercer and Michael Mercer. It says that Michael is actually his step father and that he married Lisa a few years ago. There isn’t any mention of a biological father which would give me enough reason to believe his story about the original Captain Boomerang. Gazing down at the cut on my arm, I note that his skills are further proof.
Lisa Star, the name rings a bell, and I dive further into her own records in hopes of additional clues. She changed her name; formerly Lisa Snart an ice skater from the sixties. It comes back to me as I look further into her records. Snart was a Rogue of Flashes from around the same time; she went by the name Golden Glider. The photograph of her in a bright orange leotard and funky ice skates brings a smile to my face. How times have changed.
Turns out she worked with Captain Cold, who just happens to be her biological brother. The links are certainly there. It’s entirely possible that she and Captain Boomerang hooked up for one night of fun after a wild night of crime. The puzzling part then is why the ability to speed up for seconds at a time. If Lisa Snart, an average everyday woman with no real powers, is his mother, there is little room for meta-genes. What would allow him to potentially tap into the speed force like that?
I tap a few buttons on the console before me and a small screen appears in the corner of the large monitor. A few rings later and I hear the familiar voice on the other end, “West residence.”
“Wally, what are you doing man?”
He laughs under his breath, “Grayson? Dude, you’re the last guy I expected to be calling me at home. It’s been what, a couple of months since I saw you. I must say, this is a pleasant surprise.”
“Yeah, it’s been too long. Things have been crazy lately, you know how it gets.”
Again he laughs, “You got that right. Try doing all the superhero stuff with two kids and a wife to worry about. It’s pretty intense man. So, are you in the neighborhood by chance? Linda is making some sort of dish in the kitchen right now, smalls amazing. I could have her make extra if you want to stop in.”
“Sadly no, I would love to take you up on that offer, but I actually had something I needed to talk to you about. That’s why I called,” I say it hesitantly. I don’t want to hurt his feelings, but I need to get to the point quickly.
I can hear the phone being shuffled around before he returns his attention back to our conversation, “Straight to business as usual huh?”
“Unfortunately, yeah. I need a favor,” I frown and look away from the monitor, as if he can see me.
There is a second of silence, and I know that he’s crushed, “Oh. Well, what can I help you with then?”
“What do you know of the old villain Golden Glider?”
Wally thinks for a minute before responding, “She was a really low brow villain that pestered Barry right? Wait, yeah, the chick in the bright orange jump suit thing!”
“That’s the one,” I say through my laughter.
“Man, I haven’t heard much about her in years, mostly in passing you know? Actually, hmm…” He stops to think once more, “yeah, I think she died a few years ago.”
I’m surprised by his answer and my empathy for this new kid grows even larger, “Are you certain? There aren’t any records of her death, but that would explain why any kind of information on her just kind of stops in 2001.”
“Yeah, I seem to remember something about a group of henchmen that she hired. She hooked them up with some replicas of Captain Cold’s gun and they turned on her or something. Cold was furious, and murdered them all out of revenge.”
I shake my head, “That’s some family ties…”
“Yeah dude, Cold has some crazy history. Why the sudden interest in his family?”
Unsure of what to tell him, I try to be as general as possible, “I fought some kid last night who claimed to be the kid of Captain Boomerang, but there aren’t any records that indicate that to be true. In my research I found Glider’s name and was wondering what kind of info I could get on her; maybe some relationship history that would put the two together.”
“Oh, wow, there is a new Captain Boomerang? And he’s in Gotham of all places?”
I laugh, “Yeah, you can see my interest in him. Why is he here and what does Gotham offer him that Central City can’t?”
“I can’t imagine why anyone would want to take up that mantle, unless they were interested in family traditions.”
Nodding, I agree, “That’s true. I don’t know, something just seems off about him. Hopefully he isn’t outside of help. His records show he’s clean, so he hasn’t been at this for very long. I want to stop him before he does the wrong thing and screw his whole life up, ya know?”
“Pretty positive thoughts there Dick, think you can handle it?”
A smile creeps onto my face, “I’m certainly going to try. Thanks for the info Wally. Tell Linda I’m sorry I had to pass on her wonderful cooking. Next time I’m in town, I’ll be sure to look you up, we need to catch up.”
“Absolutely. Take care boy wonder.”
“Later Wally,” I shake my head and cut the line. The extra window fades and the files on Owen reappear once more. Several more minutes pass as I focus on the stack of files open on the desktop. I become obsessed, searching for any clues or details on the enigmatic youth and his past. I need to know what drove him to follow in his father’s footsteps, and why that path has led him to Gotham.
