The Shade lay in a wet alleyway, a victim of a surprise attack by Misfit, a junior member of the Birds of Prey and Oracle’s ward. “Kill her!” he ordered the Shadow Thief as he backed away.
The Thief quickly flew towards his prey, but she vanished in her signature glittering pink smoke. The teen reappeared directly above him. With Hawkgirl’s mace sparking with energy, she cracked the villain over the head. “Dark Vengeance!”
“I refuse to get beaten by some girl with a mental defect,” Shade said. He raised his hand and blasted her in the back with a bolt of darkness. She teleported again, this time behind him, looking none the worse for wear. She swung the mace and connected with his back, again forcing him to the ground but doing no real damage.
“Take that, Willy Wonka!” she yelled.
“Never in my years have I met someone this insane,” Shade said as he rose to his feet. “I’ve had enough of your chatter. Be gone!” he ordered and fired several razor sharp shards of shadow at the young heroine. Just as he expected, she teleported. But this time when she reappeared she found herself in a field of solid darkness.
“Cheater!” Charlie declared as she tried to find the slightest trace of light. Even the mace that was giving off energy was unseen by her. It was as if she was blind. “Afraid of getting beat by a girl?”
“Hardly,” Shade’s voice said from next to her. She wildly swung the weapon, but found only air. “You are on my turf now, girl.” Charlie attacked again and again she missed.
“You’re making me angry, old man. You wouldn’t like me when I’m angry,” she warned.
This time the Shade did not respond with words. Misfit inhaled suddenly as she felt a sharp pain in her stomach. Without vision her only recourse was to feel for what had happened. As she reached down her abdomen she felt a wetness that shouldn’t have been there. The Shade smiled in the darkness as Misfit’s own blood poured out over her hands. He took the shadows away so that she could see how hurt she actually was. “You have made your last mistake,” Shade told the girl.
“No, that would be you,” Black Canary said as she hit him with a flying roundhouse kick to his face. He flew backwards and slammed against his car. A crossbow bolt from Huntress pinned both sides of his jacket to the car door.
Hawkgirl flew over and caught the collapsing Misfit. “Are you ok honey?”
“Just…need a sec,” she said as her eyes began to close.
“Huntress, stay on him. If he as so much as dims it out here you put one in his skull,” Canary said as she rushed over to Misfit. She sat on the ground and held her in her arms. She tried to make the girl sit up and remain conscious. “Misfit honey, I need you to teleport,” she said.
“Canary, what the hell are you saying?” Hawkgirl asked, afraid for the girl’s safety.
“She heals when she ports,” she told Hawkgirl without taking her eyes off of Charlie. “Please honey, you gotta teleport. Just a few feet in front of you, alright?”
“I’m kinda…tired right now,” Charlie said weakly.
“You don’t give up, Misfit. You wanted this life with us. You wanted to be a hero. Prove to us that we didn’t make a mistake. Don’t you dare make a liar out of us,” Black Canary pleaded.
“I am a hero…” Misfit said.
“Prove it!”
With that, the girl vanished and reappeared several feet ahead of where she was. The massive wound in her stomach was now half the size it was. Unfortunately as she reappeared she also passed out.
“Is she gonna be alright?” Huntress asked.
“Yea, she’s still lost a lot of blood. Hawkgirl, take her back to base,” Canary ordered. Kendra nodded and scooped up the teenager. Once she had taken flight, she turned back to Huntress and The Shade. “You would have been in so much trouble if she died,” Canary warned.
“Not as much as she would have been,” Shade said with a sick smile.
“You son of a b###h!” Huntress said and pointed her crossbow directly in his eye.
“Where is the Gate Key?” Dinah asked. “What do you want with it?”
“I’m afraid I have no time to chat. If you will excuse me.” As Canary and Huntress wondered what made him think he could just walk away they got their answer. Shadow Thief phased through the car and tackled both women. He grabbed Dinah by her neck to stop her sonic scream while tossing Helena through a window of the building they were just in. The Shade took that opportunity to get in his car and quickly flee the scene. Black Canary struggled to break free, but her kicks and punches simply passed through the Thief.
“Let her go,” Huntress screamed and shot a flare right through Shadow Thief’s head. It didn’t kill him, but the light did drive him back.
“What the hell…,” he said, speaking for the first time since the fiasco began. “Where am I?” he asked before looking over at Black Canary and Huntress who looked extremely pissed. “Oh crap,” he said and phased through the street and escaped.
“What was that about?” Huntress asked as she helped her partner up.
“Who knows with these guys? Let’s just get back to base and check on Charlie.”
-Oracle’s Tower-
Babs and Kendra were watching over Charlie, who was resting peacefully in her own bed. They turned to look at Dinah as she entered the room. It was obvious Oracle had been crying. Knowing her best friend as she did, Dinah knew that she blamed herself.
“She’s going to be ok,” Dinah said. “She did really well tonight. You would have been proud.”
“I am proud. I would be more proud if I didn’t almost get her killed,” Babs said as she rolled out of the room.
“It wasn’t your fault. There was no way even you could have predicted The Shade being there. He’s not our usual clientele, after all,” Dinah said as she followed Babs, leaving Hawkgirl to watch over Charlie.
“If she had a normal life this wouldn’t have happened.”
“She’s a metahuman. We don’t usually get normal lives,” Canary stated.
Babs said nothing else as she approached her console and began pressing buttons at a rapid rate. “We have to solve this problem and fast. I’ve been tracking Shadow Thief. I seemed to have pinned down his location. I’m not taking any chances this time. I’m calling in help.”
“Oh? Who now?”
“Batman and Nightwing.”
