Hawkgirl and Misfit lay at the feet of a villain called The Shade. From what Black Canary could remember, he was an immortal that could send shadows to destroy his victims. They had tracked the Shadow Thief down to this location after he had stolen an artifact from Carter Hall. But instead of ambushing the Thief, it seemed that Huntress and Black Canary were now themselves at a disadvantage.
“How unfortunate for you two,” Shade said as he stood above their teammates with Shadow Thief behind him. In his right hand was the Gate Key, the item the Thief had stolen. Hawkgirl had warned that it held the power to open portals to other dimensions and that it was extremely dangerous, especially in the wrong hands. And at that moment, those hands belonged to The Shade.
“What do you want with that?” Canary asked.
“Aren’t we a nosey bird?”
“We know what it does you Goth freak!” Huntress blurted out.
“Charming. With a mouth like that, there is no way you remain unmarried,” Shade taunted. “Well I suppose this is the part where I reveal my master plan or something clichéd like that?”
“Pretty much,” said Black Canary.
“Perhaps next time,” he said. The Shade raised his hands above his head causing shadows to swirl into columns that quickly took on a humanoid shape. “Destroy them. Come Shadow Thief,” Shade directed and he and the Thief quickly rushed out of the room.
“I hate criminal masterminds,” Dinah said as she readied herself for the shadow fighters that were running towards them.
“It’s a good warm-up to slap henchmen around,” Helena joked. Out of the corner of her eye, she spotted some of the shadow men going towards the still unconscious Hawkgirl and Misfit. “Canary!” she said, calling attention towards the threat.
“On it!” Black Canary replied and unleashed her Canary Cry. The shadow men near their allies were quickly disintegrated by the sheer force of the attack.
Hawkgirl grabbed her head in pain and sat up by leaning on one of her elbows. “What the hell happened?”
“The Shade has the Gate Key!” Dinah warned while landing a sidekick to a shadow man. Huntress shot a flare from her crossbow that quickly destroyed a group of three of the attackers.
“Kid, wake up,” Hawkgirl pleaded as she shook Misfit back to consciousness.
“Oh God, we didn’t…you know, did we?” Misfit asked as she rubbed her temples.
“You are a vile little thing,” Hawkgirl responded before refocusing on the problem at hand. “The Shade was the one that took us out before. He has the artifact. You are the fastest, you must get to him,” Kendra informed the teenager.
“Right, I’ll grab him,” Misfit nodded.
“Wait,” Kendra said to stall Misfit’s speedy exit. “Shadow Thief is with him. Not much on Earth can hurt him, but Nth medal can. Take my mace.” Hawgirl took the weapon from her belt and handed it to the girl. “But be careful, it is not a toy.”
“Shweet!” Misfit said and held the weapon above her head. “I have the power!” she declared and vanished in a puff of pink smoke.
Hawkgirl rolled her eyes as she rushed to fight the last of the shadow men. “We’re doomed.
-Outside the Building-
The Shade and Shadow Thief were rushing down the alleyway towards a waiting car. He would have usually simply teleported via the shadows, but it was too great a risk to do so with the Gate Key in his possession. Its powers could cause him to teleport into the sun or a worse dimension by accident. That was the reason he sent Shadow Thief to retrieve it in the first place. He reached the car and opened the door only to be met with a cloud of pink smoke. “What?!” he said as he gasped for air.
“En garde!” Misfit cried as she kicked Shade in the face and knocked him down onto the pavement.
The immortal villain looked upon her with daggers in his eyes. “Kill her!”
