A dark gray minivan sat on a dirty street. Inside were three members of Oracle’s team. Black Canary was in the driver’s seat, hidden from view with tinted windows. Beside her was her partner Huntress. And behind them both was a newer addition to the team, also known as…
“Misfit, shut up!” Huntress and Canary screamed in unison.
“What?” the teenager questioned. “There’s nothing else to do. Besides, what better way to spend a car trip than one hundred bottles?”
“The car isn’t moving, kid,” Huntress snapped. “I swear, they warn you about these stakeouts in cop shows, but do people ever learn?”
“How does Babs know that Shadow Thief is going to show up?” Misfit asked.
“She’s Oracle when we’re in the field, Misfit,” Dinah warned.
“Right, sorry.”
Misfit, also known as Charlie Gage-Radcliffe, is an orphan with the metahuman ability to teleport only herself anywhere she wishes to go. She also possesses enhanced healing while she teleports, or bounces as she refers to it. Her abilities are somehow magically based, but Oracle has yet to push for any answers as to why this is. She first appeared to Dinah and Helena has the newest Batgirl, but on insistence from Oracle, took on a new identity. She now lives as Oracle’s ward and somewhat sidekick.
“But Oracle always finds these things out. That’s why we have our sensors rigged. Shadow Thief uses a technology to do what he does and now we’re able to track him within a block radius. He won’t be able to get the jump on us this time,” Dinah informed.
“Plus I have several surprise bolts for the guy,” Helena bragged.
“Just don’t get cocky. This guy is slippery. We tried to scout the building, but we can’t get any good recon,” Canary said in frustration.
“So either he’s not meeting someone or he’s meeting someone really good,” Huntress confirmed.
“Right. They may even be aware we’re here, so don’t let your guard down.” Dinah took another sip of her coffee and squinted out the window. Nothing yet, but by now she knew not to question Oracle’s information.
“So why is Hawkchick with us?” Misfit wondered.
“She’s fought Shadow Thief before. Her mace can disrupt his form and actually hurt him. And she knows about the Gate Key,” Dinah told her.
“So why isn’t she in here with us?”
“She’s perching somewhere. Aerial recon.”
“Better not open the moon roof,” Helena joked.
“Gross!” Misfit screamed from the back.
“I’m with the kid,” Dinah agreed.
“Scary thought.”
“So we’re here to find out what this Shadow guy wants with a key to open other dimensions, right?” Misfit confirmed.
“Basically. He’s supposed to be handing it off tonight at this locale, according to old fearless,” Huntress informed.
“So we’ll lay down a load of heroic justice on him and his bossman!” Misfit enthusiastically added.
Huntress glanced back at Misfit through the rearview mirror. “Swell.”
“If Misfit is going to be a member of this team, she needs on the job training, as it were,” Dinah told Huntress, trying to calm her down a bit.
“And it’ll be great!” Misfit amended.
“Speaking of, he’s here,” Canary announced while pointing to her monitor. “Huntress, you take the wrist mounted tracker. Misfit, on my mark you teleport inside, but no engaging, got it?”
“Roger that, bosslady!”
“Hawkgirl, do you read me?” Dinah said while activating her com.-link.
“Affirmative,” she replied.
“We’re heading in on my mark. Ready…go!” Hawkgirl flew overhead while Misfit vanished in a puff of pink smoke. Black Canary and Huntress dashed from the van and ran up to the door. Dinah counted down from three on her fingers before both of them opened the door and rushed inside.
They ran through several dimly lit corridors until they got to the main room of the complex, which became pitch black. “He’s in here somewhere,” Huntress confirmed.
“He’s not the only one. Welcome ladies,” a voice said as the blackness all faded to reveal Shadow Thief next to The Shade.
At their feet were an unconscious Hawkgirl and Misfit. “Care to join your friends?” The Shade asked as he pointed his hand at the duo and darkness crept towards them.
