While investigating a robbery at Carter Hall, a.k.a. Hawkman’s warehouse, Black Canary and Speedy ran across the Shadow Thief, an old rival of the Hawk family, stealing something from inside. They thought that Canary’s sonic scream and put him down for the count. They were wrong. Shadow Thief immediately dove through the two heroines and rushed for the exit.
“Oh no you don’t!” Speedy said and shot arrow after arrow at him. They each exploded in a burst of light, causing the vagrant to change his straight path of escape into a zigzag of madness to try and avoid his weakness. Black Canary took off after him, jumping over the tables and piles of boxes filled with antiques that Hawkman had picked up over his many lifetimes.
“Get back here, Carl!” Dinah demanded as she gained on him. Her mastery of martial arts would do nothing to an intangible foe, so she had to rely on her metahuman ability. Once she was close enough, she once again unleashed her Canary Cry. The physical side of it probably did little, but he could still hear. Unfortunately the attack seemed to accelerate him towards the door where he simply phased through. “Damn it!” By the time Speedy and Dinah opened the warehouse door, Shadow Thief was long gone.
Canary immediately pressed her hand to her ear and activated her communicator. “O?”
“I’m here. What’s the situation?” Oracle asked her operative.
“It was Shadow Thief. He took something I think, couldn’t really tell because he went all wraithy on us,” Dinah explained in obvious annoyance.
“I’ll see if I can get a catalogue of the warehouse. If he took something, then it was probably for a specific task. I’ve warned Hawkman already, but he seems to be in the middle of something.”
“Lovely. So what now?”
“Guard the warehouse incase there is another attempt at it. I’ll arrange some relief as soon as possible as well as try to find out what he would want with whatever it is he took. Oracle out.”
“Fantastic,” Dinah said, rolling her eyes. After fumbling around in the dark for several minutes, she managed to turn on the lights. “There. So, wanna keep me company for however long until Oracle sends someone?” she asked Mia.
“Sure, why not,” Speedy replied and sat down on an ancient stone bench. “So how did you know about Shadow Thief? It’s not like he’s an A lister or anything,” Mia wondered. “They brief you on everyone when you’re in the JLA? Or did Oracle teach you?”
“I Wiki’d him,” she said.
Mia immediately burst out laughing. When she finally caught her breath, she wiped the tears from her eyes. “Seriously?”
“So?”
“Why on Earth would you get the idea to Wiki a villain? And why is there a Wiki page for him?”
“There’s a Wiki page for my fifth grade teacher,” Dinah admitted. “But sometimes I can’t sleep. So I Wiki things. Don’t you?”
“Well, not really. But I’m definitely Wiki’ing myself when I get home,” Mia joked.
“I’m sure you will, kid. I know I do.”
-Later at Oracle’s Tower-
Barbara Gordon, former Batgirl and current hacking hero called Oracle, was busy at her neon green holographic console, viewing many things at once and doing even more. Dinah Lance entered from the door behind her with the silence of the wind. Despite that, Oracle greeted her without even batting an eyelash. “Sorry for the wait. Speedy head home?”
“Yea, she had to get back,” Dinah said. She walked up and stood directly behind Babs. Despite all she had seen in her long, heroic life, there was still some technology here that she could barely comprehend. “Any news from Carter?”
“He’s left this in our capable hands.”
“Swell then. So, did you ever find out what the creepy guy was after?” Dinah asked.
“The Gate Key,” someone else said from behind them. Dinah turned to find…
“Hawkgirl?”
“I thought it was best to bring in her in, considering what and who we are dealing with,” Oracle explained.
“Right. So what’s this Gate Key supposed to do?” Canary asked, knowing full well she won’t like the answer.
“It allows the owner to open a gateway to any dimension they choose,” Hawkgirl said.
“Exactly as I thought,” Dinah lied. “So what would Shadow Thief want with that?”
“That’s what you are going to find out.”
