Steve Roger’s Apartment, New York City
“Steve,” Sharon’s voice rings out through the smoke. Steve takes stock of things looking around as best he can through the haze. His apartment is trashed, the man he just fought with is no were to be found, and his ribs are in the least cracked.
“I’m alright, any sign of the guy who jumped me?” Steve reaches down and picks up one of the smoke canisters and examines it.
“No but in all honesty I can’t see much more than five feet or so in front of me. Who was it,” she asks.
“I’m not entirely sure,” Steve replies. In all honesty he wasn’t. From everything Steve knew about the costumed mercenary named Spymaster it was a title that had been handed off several times. The man obviously had decent skill in hand to hand but nothing exceptional. Steve makes his way back to the kitchen his hands up were Sharon can see them. She is in a crouch behind the counter with her gun pointed his way as he makes his way.
“What happened, she asks.
Cap tosses her the canister and says, “Cheap knock off of the kind the army issues. Who ever he was, he’s either poorly funded or didn’t want us to pick up on any clues.”
“Well there goes diner,” Sharon says. As soon as the words come out of her mouth Sharon’s cell phone goes off. She set the canister on the counter and answers the phone. She converses for a second before saying, “I’ll let you talk to him.” She hands the phone over to Cap.
“Hello,” Steve answers.
“I need you and Sharon on the roof of your building in three minutes ready to go,” Nick Fury says.
“Sir I just fought off an intruder in my apartment, I think…”
“I’ll send a clean up team, there is a major situation. I need you with full gear and ready to go.”
“What’s the situation sir,” Steve asks, making his way towards his footlocker to get his uniform and shield.
“You will be briefed in the air soldier, the rest of the team is already on their way.’ With that Fury hangs up the phone giving no further details. Pushing end on the phone, Cap closes it and tosses it back to Sharon.
“Nick wants us in the air in three minutes.”
“I know,” she replies. “I wonder if we can get some kind of take out on the way…”
Meanwhile a few blocks away
A shadow silently slips down a small alley unnoticed by the homeless man who lay passed out against the wall. Keeping to the shadows the man in the spymaster uniform finds a dumpster behind a tiny restaurant. He quickly removes the disguise and throws it inside. Next he takes a small device out of his pocket inside as well. There is a quick flash of flame in the dumpster and everything inside including the clothing are gone in a matter of a few seconds. The man adjusts his newest disguise as he exits the alley.
Pulling a set of keys out of his pocket, he climbs into the cab that is parked on the corner. He pulls out just as the sound of sirens begins to move closer. Keeping the speed to a normal rate he makes his way out of the area with out so much as a look back. Leaving Brooklyn the cab heads north ignoring all potential customers. Traffic at this hour is hot and heavy but the car continues north at a moderate pact to attract no attention.
Crossing the Brooklyn Bridge the driver heads north into Manhattan. Making his way through the slower traffic, the cab pulls up outside of a large hotel. Two men dressed in expensive suits stand outside under an awning conversing. One of them looks to the cab before extending his hand to the other man. Tony Stark lets himself into the back of the cab.
“Did everything go as planned,” Stark asks as the driver pulls away from the curb.
“I wouldn’t be your top operative if it didn’t.”
“Calm down Barnes, I don’t doubt your abilities in the least. Do you think he suspected anything?”
“I don’t think so sir. I planted the device on his neck, right at the base of the hairline.”
“Good work, I knew I could count on you. I just want to stress to you once again that I am doing everything I can to help Steve when things come to a close. The suits in Washington want Fury brought in along with anyone who is helping him.”
“Don’t try to make me feel better about this again. I know what I did and I know why I did it and that’s enough for me.”
“Ok then, let’s just get to HQ and see what Fury’s up to…”
A few minutes later, in the air
“I’m going to bring you up speed on everything,” Nick Fury says as he sits across from Steve and Sharon. They are sitting on helicopter that is making it’s way across the city. “Some time after 7 P.M. a group of armed men seized the Jaizhong embassy and took hostages.”
“Isn’t that the tiny little region that broke off from China,” Steve asks.
“Yes and there’s already a short list as to who’s responsible.” Nick hands Cap a small folder with blueprints, personnel files, and other information. “So far no demands have been made and it seems like they are stalling for time.”
“What are the authorities doing?”
“They are sitting on their hands waiting for some negotiator, content to wait it out.”
“What am I going to, I mean I’m breaking the law if I try to go in there.”
“Actually you’re not,” Nick says pulling out a second larger file. “This is a copy of the Avengers charter and the agreement that they signed with the UN itself. According to that agreement it gives the Avengers the right to intervene on behalf of the UN in situation deemed…”
“The Avengers are disbanded, you know that.”
“A technicality for the courts to worry about. You and Sam both signed this, you’re in the clear. Looks like our stop,” Nick says as the helicopter begins to set down on a rooftop. “The rest of the team is here, I think you already know everyone.”
Stepping of the helicopter, Steve remarks, “you have got to be kidding.”
Falcon waits with a look that mirrors Cap’s own enthusiasm. Next to him stands Wade Wilson, better known as Deadpool. The merc with a mouth adjusts the silencer fitted on one of his pistols. In the back, Moon Knight stands alone looking over the edge of the building.
“Cap this is you’re team…”
“I don’t think I can work with these two,” Cap says gesturing towards the newcomers.
“Things aren’t as black and white as you’d like to believe Cap. And sometimes when the bad guys don’t play by the rules, you’ve got to bend the rules right back…”
