-Gotham Docks-
A motorcycle hummed to a stop several blocks from Carter Hall’s warehouse. Canary pulled off her helmet as Speedy hopped off the back. They had gotten there relatively fast, so whoever had broken into the storage unit might still be there.
“How many dockside warehouses does one city need?” Speedy whispered as they approached their destination.
“I know, right? What are we storing in these things, Krypton?” Dinah joked. As they got closer, she could hear someone moving inside. She placed her index finger over her lips to signal silence. Speedy nodded in recognition as the two reached the door. Whoever had gotten inside had done so without breaking the lock or even opening the door. Dinah pointed to the lock and Mia against just nodded and pulled out an arrow from her quiver. She kneeled down and stabbed the lock with it. Liquid nitrogen seeped out, instantly freezing it. Knowing that once they opened the door the thief would be onto them, Dinah began to mouth a countdown without actually saying the words. Once she got to one, she smashed the lock with her foot and Mia opened the door. They rushed in and closed the door behind them.
“Alright, whoever is in here has got the attention of the Justice League. It’s best to turn yourself over right now,” Dinah fibbed. She glanced back at Mia who was giving her one of those looks. Dinah could only shrug her shoulders.
Besides a few small slivers of light, the place was pitch dark. Neither heroine could see anything but piles of boxes and the shadows they cast. Despite their warnings, no thieves emerged. “This is your last warning!” Dinah informed whoever was in there with them. “Alright kid. Light the place up.”
On her orders, Speedy shot an arrow into the center of the ceiling that erupted in light that made it look like noon in the room. A scream could be heard from a few feet to the side of the girls. They turned but only saw the thief’s shadow as he ducked away from the light behind some boxes.
“Alright, we got ya. Just come out and return what you stole,” Dinah said as she rushed to wear he had hid. To her surprise, he was gone. “Where the hell?”
“I see something moving over there!” Mia shouted and aimed her bow at it. But whoever it was kept dashing around so fast that she couldn’t get a good shot.
“How fast is this guy?” Canary asked. “If this wasn’t probably expensive, I could just cut lose with a cry.”
“Yea, I don’t want to be a name on that lawsuit,” Mia added.
They were startled as the thief grabbed something from one of the boxes and hurled it at the arrow, breaking it and bathing the room once more in darkness.
“Ahhh!”
“Speedy?!”
“I’m ok. But he took my quiver somehow. I don’t know where he is, I can’t see him!”
Canary found her way back to Mia and stood with her back to back. They both pulled flashlights out of their belts and shined them around the room, looking for any sign of their intruder who obviously had some type of abilities.
“You think those things can stop me?” the thief finally spoke.
“Why don’t you come out here and find out,” Dinah coaxed.
“Nice try. I don’t know how you found out I was here, but I can’t let you leave here alive. The only problem is figuring out which one is first.”
What was this guy’s deal? And why did Dinah have such a bad feeling about it? All at once Dinah couldn’t feel Mia against her back any longer. Speedy was jerked up and away from her partner. “Let me down you creepy bastard!”
“Such language,” the intruder said with disgust. “Not the way a lady should behave.”
“I’m no lady,” Mia said and tried to reach or punch her attacker, but seemingly could not. “Dinah, I can’t touch him!”
“Britney Spears!” Dinah cried out, using the universal signal for her teammates to cover their ears. Mia did so as the high pitched scream waved across the warehouse. As the villain reached for his ears he dropped Mia to the ground. Canary’s flashlight beam rested on Mia, who was now safely out of range. With that knowledge, Dinah cut loose. Her Canary Cry plowed into the thief and knocked him against the far wall.
After gathering their weapons and flashlights, the girls slowly approached the still downed figure that was waiting in the darkness. “Who is that?” Mia asked.
“I thought so. This is the Shadow Thief. An old villain of Hawkman’s,” Canary educated.
“That’s a stupid name.”
“Thanks, Speedy,” Dinah retorted.
“You know, you both talk too much,” Shadow Thief said suddenly before leaping up and at them.
