The Cape Closet was the newest, hippest place in Gotham. Dinah couldn’t help but satisfy her curiosity by choosing it for the night’s meeting. She walked inside wearing full uniform and no one even batted an eye. To her delight and disgust everyone inside was drinking and dancing while imitating their favorite heroes and villains. Wonder Woman was dancing with Solomon Grundy near the bar which just cemented the entire experience for her. Dinah grabbed a small table in the back and ordered a Sunkist from a Green Lantern, which one she couldn’t say. She leaned back in her chair and watched in amusement. There were at least two of her out there which was creepy if not flattering.
“Here’s your soda, Black Canary,” the Green Lantern said as he placed down a napkin and put her glass on top of it. “Will there be anything else?”
“Not right now.”
“Sure thing. And if I may say so, you look almost just like Black Canary. If you lost a few more pounds you’d be twins,” he said before walking off to take Dr. Light’s order.
Behind him Dinah saw the person she was meeting there coming towards them. She stood and put on her friendliest smile as Speedy approached. “Hey.”
“Hey. Can you believe this place? Who was that?” Speedy asked as she reached the table.
“I don’t know, but I hate him,” Dinah said with an angry look. “Wait a minute. How do I know you’re the real Speedy?” Canary asked with a smile now on her face.
“Good question. If I told you about the dream you had with Batman and Superman, would that be proof enough?” Mia asked as Canary and her sat down at their table.
“I have no idea what you’re talking about. But let’s just say I no longer doubt your identity. How have you been, Mia?” She took a sip of her soda as she waited for an answer. It was flat. She hated Green Lantern even more now.
“I’ve been better.”
“Relax kid. I dated him, not you,” Dinah said and immediately regretted the way it sounded. “Wow that was really…”
“Awkward, yea.”
“I just don’t want what happened between Ollie and I to influence what you and I have, you know?”
“I understand. I miss you Dinah and wish things had worked out differently, but he’s with Vixen now. And I’m still his sidekick so ya know…” Mia said and held up one hand with its palm up like it held all the answers. “Things are all complicated.”
“That’s a good word for Mari,” Dinah said and rolled her eyes accordingly.
“This isn’t about her. Things are always weird with you and him. Sometimes good weird, sometimes not. But always weird. I like you Dinah. I really do. But Gotham and Star City are not the same place. Whenever I’m in town wild dogs can’t keep me away, but that’s all I can give right now,” Mia admitted.
“That’s all I needed to hear. I just had to know if Ollie’s feelings were your own. But you are your own person, Mia, and its finally time I realized it.”
The girl known as Speedy smiled the first time since she entered the building. “Thanks, Dinah.”
Green Lantern took that opportunity to come up and take Mia’s order. “And who are you supposed to be, honey?” he asked.
A look mixed with annoyance and rage washed over Mia’s face. “The Hulk.”
“Hmph. What will you have?”
“Nothing for me,” she informed him.
“Alrighty then, well here’s your check. Have a good night,” he said and slid the paper towards Black Canary.
Once he was out of earshot, Mia turned back to Dinah. “I hate him too.”
“Seven dollars for a flat soda? I feel sorry for the next real Green Lantern I have to see,” Canary said with a grin. She was elated to have Mia laugh in return.
“Hal’s a dead man,” she joked back.
“You notice there was two of me in here?” Dinah boasted.
“And none of me. There’s like nine Robin’s but not one Speedy.”
Dinah put on a reassuring smile. “People don’t know what they’re missing.”
“Geeze, laying it on thick, aren’t you?” Mia joked.
“Go big or go home. Hero motto.”
“Liar.”
“Prove it.”
“Can you believe they carded me? I’m sitting here wearing a mask and they still card me. What good can that do?”
“Maybe it’s some elaborate way to get secret identities?” Dinah joked.
“Good thing we carry fake I.D.’s,” Mia reminded her.
At that moment, Dinah’s communicator went off. She raised her finger to signal to Speedy that she needed a moment and pressed two fingers against her ear. “Canary here.”
“Dinah, it’s me. One of my alarms was tripped at a warehouse down by the docks,” Oracle informed her.
“Seems like small fry stuff to me, O. Can’t Misfit handle some B&E’s?” Dinah wondered.
“Normally yes. But this warehouse was owned by Carter Hall, whom I can’t reach.”
“Gotcha. Me and Speedy are on it,” she said and gave a thumbs up to Mia who sat across the table completely clueless.
“Mia’s with you? Everything ok?” Babs asked.
“Peachy, promise. We’ll be in touch. Canary out.” She then stood and turned her attention towards Speedy. “Want to go catch some baddies?”
“Well, since I’m in town and all,” the girl said, hardly able to hide her smile.
