The blaring of the alarm clock was silenced with a slap as Dinah Lance rolled over and attacked the source of her annoyance. Is that what people feel like when she uses her sonic scream on them? She’d have to make a note to ask them. She rolled out of bed and walked towards her bathroom. On a shelf on the wall was a picture of Sin, her adopted daughter. She was being trained to be the next Lady Shiva, but Dinah wouldn’t stand for it, so she rescued her. But too many people wanted Sin, so she was forced to fake her death and send her to a monastery. Everyday she missed her even more. It was no stretch for her to show pain. Dead or gone, she was out of Dinah’s life and everyone could see how it hurt her.
Next to Sin’s picture was Mia, also called Speedy. She was Green Arrow’s current sidekick. Despite the fact that she was HIV positive due to a troubled past, she was still the bravest girl Dinah had ever met. She was a quick study and always light hearted. Dinah viewed her as a daughter and nothing could ever change that.
Also on the shelf was a Polaroid of Conner Hawke, Ollie’s son. One of Dinah’s best friends and almost as good a fighter as she was. He helped her get through the time after Ollie’s death. The first one. He was a great kid, but like everyone else seemed to, he came from pain and hurt.
Next to the photographs was an old yellow, plastic bow. This had belonged to Roy Harper, the first Speedy. He was the second greatest archer she had ever met. Ollie and she had helped him get over a drug problem and get his life back on track after he left the Titans. He had a stint as a marksman named Arsenal, but eventually claimed his rightful place as Red Arrow. She couldn’t have been prouder of him if he was her own.
The one thing all those kids had in common with her was one man. Green Arrow, Oliver Queen. Things seemed to have been going well for them in the first time in their lives. They were in love, engaged, and respected Leaguers. But that wasn’t to last. On their wedding day, a shape shifter named Everyman took Ollie’s place and then tried to kill her on their honeymoon, forcing her to kill him in self defense. Everyone believed Ollie to be dead, except for Black Canary. She eventually proved it and freed Ollie from his captors, but the damage had been done. With their marriage being null and void, and the stress of the experience too much, Ollie left Dinah. It wasn’t long until he was with Vixen who quickly looked on Canary with hate and disdain, always envious, always watching. It was too much, for her, for the League. The good times were over and Dinah wasn’t sure if they would ever return. She was now doing the solo hero act, occasionally running errands for Oracle, her best friend and former Batgirl.
‘Where has my life gone,’ she wondered as she got into the shower. Her long blonde hair fell limp with water behind her. She never thought she would admit it, but she was glad she stopped wearing the wig and dyed her naturally black hair. It was much easier and blonde really was her color. Having to worry about keeping her wig on during battle was way too much of a hassle as well.
Her thoughts wandered as she took her shower, to the Justice League, her friends, but mostly to Ollie. She needed to forget him, to move one, but would that be possible with all they had in common? Vixen had already attacked Dinah when she thought she was trying to get Ollie back. Which she wasn’t. They were on different paths now. There was too much pain between. She just hoped it wouldn’t affect the League, or Mia, Roy and Conner anymore than it already had. She sighed heavily and stepped out of the shower.
With a warm towel wrapped around her, she walked back into the bedroom in time to hear a tapping on her front door. With a second towel securing her hair, she tip toed over and answered it to find Helena Bertinelli at the door. “Bad time?” Helena asked as she barged in.
“Not really I guess,” Dinah replied while closing the door behind them. “What’s up?”
“I was just in the neighborhood. Thought maybe you’d like to get some lunch. Take your mind off…” Helena paused.
“Ollie?” Dinah said, finishing her sentence.
“Things,” corrected Helena. “Some Thai food perhaps?”
“You hate Thai. Don’t change the subject,” she said and sat down on the bed.
“How are you doing on that front, since you brought it up?”
“I’m fine. Haven’t thought about him even once,” she lied.
“Well that’s fantastic. Men are stupid anyway. Strong and stupid. Strong and stupid and handsome. Strong and stupid and…”
“Helena! Been awhile has it?”
“You have no idea,” she said and snapped her thoughts back to the present.
“Don’t you think we should patrol a little first?” Dinah suggested.
“Please, it’s like two in the afternoon. Nothing ever happens in Gotham at this time.” At that moment, the side of the entire building shook. Dinah gave Helena a dirty look and rushed to the window. She brushed beside the curtain and looked out. There was Giganta stomping around her street with Cheetah scurrying about below. Dinah again looked at her friend with a look and a raised eyebrow. Helena smiled meekly before relying. “Oops?”
