Once we had finally found her, it would be Clark who would get there first, smashing straight through that which he had come to call home, in an explosion of shattered crystals. Pounding deeper and deeper past the very foundations until he reached water, there buried beneath the Antarctic ice, was the lead encased box as seen in the television screen of Lex’s tower. Like a paperweight the man of steel grips the large square cube tight, his fingers bending the metal as he takes a tighter grip.
By the time he breaks through the ice with Lois’s prison. Most of the league has arrived. Wally being the first, followed quickly by anyone that can fly, anyone that can’t soon appears in a dazzling display of light, as the Watchtowers transporters teleport as many as they can take.
If I had to give a time as to when we lost Clark, I guess if I had understood things better. It would have been at this precise moment.
Ripping open the sides of the lead container like a tin can, water spills out of the torturous device. In the middle, Louis Lanes lifeless body rests limp inside her constraints. Still strapped to the chair, her bounds show little sign of struggle.
“NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO” his scream says it all; his gift of super hearing tells him before anyone that there is no heartbeat. Like a flash he frees her from his bonds, the rest of us do what we can. Zatanna begins a healing spell, but for the rest of us, all we can do is watch.
It’s a further hour before he eventually stops trying to bring her back, he doesn’t say a word, none of us do. Instead we simply watch as he takes her lifeless body into his arms and floats back into his fortress.
In hindsight, I believe this is when we should have gone to him, perhaps we could have saved him from tipping in to the abyss, but what’s done is done, the sands of time only flow in a single direction.
He stayed in the fortress for two full days, most of the league stood watch outside the fortress, however it would be Bruce as always that saw the way in which things would eventually turn.

“Bruce where is he?”
“Diana no one can know where he is, at least not until the date of his trial”
“That man doesn’t deserve to be put on trial”
“Then what Diana, he deserves to be killed, is that it. Better yet who’s to stop you, you have the gift of the gods, so lets just deal out our own brand of justice”
“This is different Bruce and you know it”
“No its not different, its just closer to home. Just like Sue Dibny”
“So that’s its”
“That’s what”
“Why you’re so mad, you still resent the league for what they did to you”
“You mean stole my memories simply because I didn’t share their opinion, your damn right I am. But it goes deeper than my anger at what they did. That day showed we couldn’t be trusted, that it only took a reason strong enough for us to turn against everything we believed in. I wont allow it to happen, laws are put in place for a reason and I wont see a man killed simply so as to justify the need, even if that man is Lex Luthor”
“Damn it Bruce”
“No Diana, you know I’m right, when Clark comes out of that fortress and it’s only a matter of time before he does. Do you really believe he will be the same Boy Scout we all knew?”
“He’ll grieve, we all will”
“No Diana, it will kill him, he will go after Luthor and it will be down to us to stop him”
“If he wanted to get to Lex, what makes you think we could stop him?”
“Actually, I don’t. Which is why we need a plan”
“We’ve been down this road before, it lead to the OMAC’s Bruce”
“Then this time we had better get it right”
“I wont be a part of it”
“Then start praying to which ever one of your gods you need to that Clark never leaves that fortress, as for me, ill do what I do best and plan for the day he does”
That would be one of the last times I would see Bruce, in the end I guess that doesn’t matter, I just wish our encounters had been less focused on the constant fights that came from our differences.
Kal-El would eventually resurface from his fortress of solitude barely even a full day later, not leaving Bruce much time. Yet that is all this battle became about, minutes and seconds. As much time as we could give Bruce to do what deep down we all knew needed to be done.

It started off like any other day and when finally Superman appeared from his fortress, we believed it was the birth of a new dawn. When his only request was to give a public statement we believed and trusted that Kal-El had returned to lead us, we were wrong.

Outside the Daily Planet: Press Conference 9:32am
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
The crowd gathered quickly, I had joined Kal-El when he came to give his statement; I believed I would be a tower of strength. Bruce never showed, in the end I believe this gave Kal-El an insight in to just what Bruce was planning, but right now he was to blinded to see the dark clouds that gathered against him.
“People of Earth, I came here an alien to your world. Your suns rays wash over me with strength and power, power I have always vowed to use for the benefit of all mankind, protecting the weak and saving the innocent. I have always believed that the earths justice system was the only real way to bring about change. But I was wrong, over the last several years I have laid witness to Lex Luthor’s many attempts at seizing control of power. Manipulating entire nations like chess pieces in order to better his own corrupted goals, seen him join forces with some of this worlds most powerful and corrupt, lay waste to innocent people by the thousands with one hand and run for presidency with the other. Two days ago in a malicious act designed solely to strike at me, an innocent woman, a woman I loved, Lois Lane was killed in cold blood. Drowned to death in a prison of Lex’s own making”
It was here the crowd drew breath in shock, many people went to ask questions but instead where only met with a single gesture of a hand, my gut instinct told me their was no way Bruce could be right, but he always was, at least when it came to Clark. By the time Kal-El would come to finish his speech, the entire world would be plunged in to darkness and the battle to save all that Superman had come to stand for would only be kept alive, with the death of Superman himself.
“Lex Luthor has single headedly committed more crimes against humanity than any other living soul on this planet, yet repeatedly escapes any formal punishment by hiding behind the highest paid lawyers and loop holes, well no more. I am personally going to see to it that Lex Luthor pays for his crimes. So I say to everyone gathered here, Lex I know you are out there, there is no where on earth I can’t find you, know that I’m coming for you and that by the end of today you will pay the price for what you have done”
He didn’t say it then, he didn’t have to, and within the hour every major press in the country would publish Superman’s death threat on their front page. Boosting sales by the thousands, what’s worse is that no one really tried to stop him. The public seemed to believe in Superman like we all had, believed that what he was doing was right.
I would be the first to try and stop him, but this isn’t where I died, we never even raised a fist to each other. Instead I tried in vain to reason with him. Superman had taken to the skies, it took all the speed of the gods for me to keep up, but it was enough.
“Kal-El you can’t do this”
“What, bring Lex Luthor to justice. Course I can Diana and what’s more is, he now knows it as well.”
“Not like this, you haven’t had time to grieve, you can’t face him like this”
“I don’t need to grieve in order to know what’s right, Lex deserves to be punished for what he did”
“I never said he didn’t Kal, I just think this isn’t the best way to bring him in. let the league or the JSA handle it. I promise you’ll see justice for what happened to Lois”
“You shouldn’t make promises you can’t keep Diana, and the league is welcome to try and get in my way on this one. But I’m bringing him to justice”
It was at that moment I knew he was going to kill Lex, in a streak of red he disappeared from sight. Immediately I contacted the watchtower, but J’onn had already seen in Kal’s mind what he had planned and was already mounting a defence.
Within the hour every active member was here and ready, all accept two. Super-girl was nowhere to be seen, as was Bruce. It was strange hearing J’onn speak, everyone in the room was ready to take up arms against the one man who had stood for everything the league had stood for.
The talking was over and instantly I could see people beaming down in groups of five and ten, outside the watchtower several Green Lantern’s not all of them from earth floated outside ready for battle, this really was it. Everything sank in at that moment. I knew Bruce had been right, we had to prepare, which meant only one thing. I had to go home.
