One week later, SHIELD Installation 4623
“Glad you two decided to join me,” Nick Fury says as he gestures to a pair of chairs. Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson take a seat across from him. Steve is still heavily bandaged and has a crutch to help him walk. The two men take the seats as Fury lights up a fresh cigar. “First of all let me assure you both that this is a one hundred percent secure location. There isn’t a single file anywhere in the SHIELD database about this installation.”
“That’s a good thing since Director Stark has put your capture as top priority,” Falcon answers. “Now do you mind explaining what that was we saw at the hanger?”
“I must thank you for not telling anyone about that, but the problem is I can’t. I don’t know how a skrull was impersonating the Red Skull let alone why. And that’s what worries me.”
“It’s a rare occasion when Nick Fury admits he doesn’t know everything.”
“I’ve had a medical team going over the body from the moment we got it here. It’s a skrull in a highly advanced state, unlike anything we’ve ever seen. The scariest part is there are trace amounts of your DNA Steve.”
“That thing had the Red Skull’s DNA,” Steve asks.
“As crazy as it sounds yes. That is the problem, I don’t know who to trust. If the skrulls have found a way to replicate a person down to their DNA how do we detect them? And who is who they say they are and who is a skrull?”
“So what are you going to do about it,” Cap asks.
“First thing is first I am staying out of sight so I can operate. I need the time for my research team to figure out a way to detect the skrulls. Secondly I’m stepping up surveillance on a number of key people. I don’t think the skrulls would just choose anyone to impersonate, so I’ve compiled a list of possible based on the maximum potential. And lastly, I’m looking to put together a team and that’s were you come in.”
“What kind of team,” Cap asks.
“I need some heavy hitters to take care of things my regular agents can’t. I don’t know were this skrull trail is going to lead, but the Avengers are no longer there to take care of things.”
“Way to play a guilt card,” Sam replies. “Just because the Avengers are taking a break doesn’t mean they aren’t going to reform.”
“Stark is now the permanent Director of SHIELD and I don’t think you realize what that means. The government won’t let him fund the Avengers considering how many of the past members were listed at one time as security risks. And I don’t know who else would have the funds to support the group. I’m not saying it’s over by any stretch of the imagination but…”
“I know,” Cap answers. “I’ve been an Avenger so long, I guess never put a lot of thought into doing something else. So who else do you have in mind for the team?”
“I’ve got a few people in mind…”
