Back in the Lab
“A worthy test,” Maria Hill says. Around the room the mechanical pods are opening and the figures within have begun to stir. Thor calmly cracks his knuckles as he sweeps the room with his steely gaze. The figures are both male and female with every conceivable body type. They all share two features, every one of them has blond hair and blue eyes. “It is a shame that such a fine Aryan specimen as yourself would rather die than join us.”
“People like you make me sick. You twist pride into hatred and think yourself better than everyone who isn’t like you. I will not allow this.”
“I knew you would say that, you are weak. We will begin by cleansing the United States and from there the rest of the continent. All of the ill-bred vermin will be wiped out to make way for the master race.”
“Hey do you mind if a few of us ill-bred vermin have something to say about that,” says Clint Barton from the doorway. Hawkeye walks in followed by an array of costumed heroes, Wasp, She Hulk, Falcon, Daredevil, Nightcrawler, Hercules, Warmachine, Pym, and Dark Star. They fan out around the entrance eyeing the clones who stand silently.
“It matters very little to me.” With a wave of her hand she sends the clones into action. One leaps at Thor with razor claws extended only to meet the thunder god’s fist. The clone’s body suddenly turns into vapor and it flows around the fist. The mist reforms beside the god and drives a fist into his ribs. Thor turns and grabs the clone around the neck. As his fingers lock, the clone turns to a mist once more.
The scene plays itself out across the room, as clones and heroes clash. Hawkeye fires a gas arrow into a crowd only to see that it has little to no effect. She Hulk punches one of the smaller clones and finds it is her fist that is hurting. Daredevil is dodging energy blasts from a mutant whose eyes seem to fire independent of each other. And Hercules is locked in hand to hand combat with a small teenage girl who is going toe to toe and not backing down.
“As you can see, our army is superior in every conceivable way. Each one of them has been genetically programmed to maximize their potential” Maria Hill shouts across the battlefield. She throws her head back and laughs as she loads another clip into her pistol. Suddenly she drops to the floor as Wasp fires a burst of stings into the back of her neck.
“Maybe that will shut her up,” Janet says of her com.
“I’m thinking we need a plan and fast,” Hawkeye says into his com. “We’re barely keeping a stalemate here.”
“Agents are on their way to you position,” Fury interjects.
“Negative on that, they’d just get cut to pieces,” Janet replies…
Meanwhile
“By now your blond friend is being cut to pieces. It is a shame really, I had hoped that he would join us.” Red Skull mocks Captain America as he takes another swing with his cane. Cap ducks under the cane and throws out a straight right. Red Skull jumps back to narrowly avoid the punch.
“Shut up and fight,” Cap says as he launches an offensive barrage at his long time foe. He connects with a solid kick to the ribs that makes Skull grunt as his wind is knocked out of him. He follows this up with a shield slam that wobbles the Nazi back on his heels. Cap presses his advantage delivering an uppercut that knocks Red Skull flat on his back.
“This is over now. Fury is going to put you in a deep dark hole were you’ll never see the light of day again.”
“I wouldn’t bee so sure of that,” Skull replies. Something in his voice is suspicious and gives Cap a moment to react. He dives to one side just as a single gunshot rings out. Steve feels the pain as the bullet slice in one side of his left calf and out the other side. He rolls through the dive and manages to find cover behind the small aircraft.
“Crossbones so good of you to join us,” Skull says.
“I winged him,” a familiar voice says. Cap leans forwards and puts pressure on his wounded leg causing more blood to pump out. Knowing he isn’t safe here Steve scouts around the hanger for cover. There is a large tool box about fifteen feet away. “Don’t you want to come out and play?”
“You do realize you just pinned me down behind the vehicle you plan on escaping in?” With that Steve throws his shield into one of the engines causing sparks to fly. Leaving the shield behind, Cap makes a dive across the room towards the tool box. Bullets wiz across the floor as he slides and just manages to reach safety. Crossbones puts a full clip into the box making it shake but it’s great weight holds it upright.
“Damnation now he has ruined my jet,” Skull says.
“We’ll simply have to make our way out underground,” Crossbones replies. The sound of him snapping another clip into his gun echoes as do his footfalls as he makes his way across the metal flooring. “I must say it was a good move to damage our escape vehicle, but you’ve deprived yourself of your favorite toy.”
In one smooth motion Cap pops over the top of the box and lets fly with a large wrench. The move catches the hitman off guard and the tool slams into his head knocking him to the floor. “I guess I’ll have to improvise…”
Meanwhile
Dr. Kailius follows his silent companion as they make their way through a maze of underground tunnels. They are very dimly lit by the red emergency light on the wall. His guide takes a very clear path, never hesitating at an intersection. Kailius tries to mark their path in his head but quickly gives up after he realizes that the intersections look virtually identical. He pulls the large metal briefcase on wheels behind him with one arm and carries a small bag on his other shoulder.
“I hope you know were you’re going,” the scientist says. The man in black doesn’t answer nor does he even look back. “Would you at least carry this bag and make yourself useful.”
The man in black stops and turns around to face Kailius. “In case you don’t remember, the early failures were thrown down here to guard this entrance. If you’d like me to carry that instead of a weapon, then by all means.” With that the man in black turns and continues to walk.
Kailius now watches down every passage they pass, sure that he sees movement. The minutes drag on like hours and the scientist begins to sweet. At one point he is almost sure he sees red eyes watching from the very edge of his vision. For his part the man in black is unconcerned. He keeps his attention on the path ahead. In the distance there seems to be a soft white light in the distance.
Kailius quickens his pace, even passing his escort. He arrives in a small room with one other exit, a metal blast door with no windows. There is a keypad to the right of the door that currently has a red screen. Kailius walks over to the panel and punches in his key code. A buzzer sounds and the light remains red.
“Why won’t my code work,” Kailius says. He doesn’t even feel it as the bullet passes through his brain killing him instantly.
“I’ve wanted to do that since you sent me to extract him.”
“He served his purpose,” a voice says from the darkness. From the shadows steps Mr. Sinister with a broad smile on his face. “I could not run the risk of working for Red Skull myself and now I have claimed the prize.”
“Will we be leaving now master?”
“Yes and don’t forget the cases…”
