"This isn't good." I say as I stare at Booster who lies in the bed. His arm is tinted blue, Skeet's attempt to stop the OMAC virus from taking hold had worked, at least for the time.
"I think that may be an understatement." J'onn stands in the corner of the room his body covered in shadows, whether it’s a trick of the light or his doing I'm not sure. "I have been watching the reports since I recovered, the attacks are becoming more prevalent, more of our kind are endanger."
"I know, and it's my fault." I admit the exhaustion of the last couple days finally catching up with me. I almost fall into the chair at Booster's beside. I think the medical staff here is getting tired of me, first J'onn and now Booster. The bodies keep coming in by my hand; I keep doing this to my friends.
"It is not your fault Theodore and I sense that you know that." J'onn's red eyes glow in the shadows. "This is no one man's fault."
"Yeah but I should have done more, I should have...”
"You have done much already and your desire to do more is what gives you the heart of hero. A quality that is rare enough already." He's like a taller version of Yoda.
"I believe you know what the next step is, how all this must end?" He asks. He was awake when Mari and I got back from Paris and the disaster that the trip had turned into. He was standing at the window watching the horizon; we stood in silence as visions from his sleep filled my mind.
"Yeah, go and do what you have to. We'll meet up afterwards and finish this thing for good." He nods as he fades into the wall; I see a glimmer of the two way communicator I gave him. It's an upgraded model from our days in the League, he doesn't trust this place and I don't blame him.
"He's a very solitary man isn't he?" Skeets asks as he floats in the air, watching over Booster in a very human manner.
"How's the patient?" I change the subject. I tell myself that J'onn is going to be OK, that he can handle himself.
"I've been able to contain the virus, the anti-bodies in Michael’s bloodstream have already done a great deal to further halt the progress of the infection and the virus appears to be in remission." Skeet's hovers closer to the chair that I lounge in. I don't say anything as I watch Booster's chest rise and fall.
"What happened Skeet's? How did you?" Clarity is again working its way back into my clouded mind. I snapped at Mari earlier, she'll get over it but I still feel bad. I need to take a step back and start thinking this through, like a math equation and hopefully I come up with something greater then zero.
"Like I told you before my data on this era is more inaccurate then I would have predicted and Booster's knowledge of history is..."
"Non existent?"
"Yes. He was approached by Maxwell Lord months ago to be a figure head for this team. Max promised him fame and fortune as the saying goes."
"I'm sure he did. He approached you about the same time as Opal, and when the OMAC's first started appearing, didn't he?" Max was the liaison of the Justice League during my first tenure on it. He was a used car sales man then as well. Something like this though, putting innocent lives in danger, that's not Max. Our lives maybe, but innocents?
"So I can deduce you have reached the same conclusion that I already have." The lights reflect of Skeets's shell make it look like he's glowing.
"That Max Lord is involved in this and if he is, the United Nations might be and if they are...” I don't finish but the thought that Waller and Checkmate could be involved won't surprise me.
"Ted." Her voice is steely, she peaks her head in the room, almost timidly. Jessica Midnight stands there, pushing the bangs out of her eyes. It's unlike her, something's wrong. "We have a problem."
"We do?"
"It's Vixen she went to visit Green Arrow in Star City. There's been... She's on line one, it's urgent." I pick up the phone, on the night stand; I can hear deep breathing, possibly sobbing.
"Mari you sound shaky, are you alright. You shouldn’t be calling me like this you know they can trace the signal” I sound more paranoid then I really am.
“Damn it t...e..ddd for gods sake just sh..uu..t up and liste..n to .m..e.” Interference is cutting her out but I think I get the point. “They have Ollie”
“Who Mari, who has Oliver.” I almost drop the phone but hang on for her sake.
“The OMAC’s, theirs pieces of them all around the god damn apartment.” He took a couple down with him, just like Ollie.
“Stay with me Mari, we’ll get a team over there to you, I just need you to focus. Is their anything you can pickup, a scent…anything at all?” I reach into my pocket for my private phone; J'onn can be there as quickly as I can call him.
“Theirs blood, I can see it in the fibers, I can taste it on the air, and I can smell it all around me….” If she lets the animals over take her, I'm not sure anyone could bring her back.
“It’s ok Mari where on our way.” I stand up, and make my way towards the door.
“No.” Her words are so forceful I stop dead in my tracks.
“What?”
“I said no.” This isn't going as well I hoped, her voice sounds more feral as we continue to talk.
“You need to be brought in and a team needs to go over that apartment.” I begin to type the access code for J'onn's communicator into my phone.
“Ollie.” She's starting to lose it. Damn it Mari, relax.
“I know he’s gone, but we’ll find him Mari, that’s a promise.”
“No, what if Ollie isn’t the only one...” I let the phone drop to the ground and take my private cell out of my pants pockets, hitting a string of numbers that I know by heart.
Melody Case puts the last of the files into her brief case as she gets ready to go home for the evening. The picture in the silver frame on her desk catches her attention. She stands on one of Gotham's many building rooftops with Ted, he's holding her close. She's still not sure how he got the picture but she's thankful that he did. As she places the last of the file folders, the sleek blue phone on her desk begins to vibrate, another present from Ted.
"Hello. I at the office, why what's wrong? Ted I'm OK had a couple meetings today but that's the worst of it." She can hear his voice relax as she talks to him, whatever he's doing now she's never seen this side of him before. He's sounds more frantic and scattered then she can ever remember.
"Listen, I'm going to go home and draw a hot bath, when I get there I'll give you a call and we can relax together." She smiles as she hangs up the phone. She looks around the office one last time as she picks up her brief case.
The sting sends a jolt through her body; she touches the point of impact only to feel a long slender needle sticking out of her neck. She looks around as the world fogs up, trying to figure out what had happened as she falls to the floor. As she hits the plush carpet she sees the shadow approach from seemingly out of no where. She begins to drift into unconscious, with her only thoughts being about Ted.
"She's secure. We can move into End Game now."
