I've been all over the world, even to a few different ones but I've never taken the time to really visit a place. We walk on the sidewalk passing both tourists and residents of the City of Love. It's a surprisingly warm and clear night for this time of year, and everyone seems to be taking advantage of it. In the distance I can see the silhouette of the Eiffel Tour, the lights around it fading in and out of existence in an rhythmic pattern.
"It's beautiful isn't it?" Her voice seems so young and full of joy, like she's seeing the world for the first time.
"Yeah, although I always thought it'd be smaller, more intimate. Instead it's just so big and spread out and crowded and kinda old." I reply looking over at Mari, she furrows her brow clearly not happy with my perspective.
"I don't know about that. There's this little cafe that one time after a show..." She begins, wrapping her arms around her stomach as she gets caught up in the memory.
"I probably don't want to know." I raise my hand stopping her before she can get into to many details. She's a real beauty, one of the people you are never sure exactly what to say around, and that if you say the wrong thing she may never talk to you again. Yet I feel more comfortable then I probably should. Trusting each other with yours lives probably has something to do with it.
"You just need to share it with the right person, isn't there somebody out there you want to share a kiss with on the Eiffel tour, tour the Lourve with, stroll through the Tuileries Gardens holding hands?" She's really enjoying herself to much, but she's right. I should be sharing my first visit here with somebody that gives my stomach butterflies. I should be here with her; with Melody. When I called her I could hear the concern in her voice, she's been there for me. When this is done, I want to do to the same for her.
"Shouldn't you be having this conversation with Ollie?" I raise an eyebrow as the lights of the city shimmer around us.
"I'd like to but...he's...." She stumbles trying to find the right words to describe her current flame.
"Ollie?"
"Yeah." We stop walking in front of the large structure referred to as The Dome. It towers above the surrounding buildings, yet for some reason it seems to fit right in, the glass that lines the outside lets it mirror its surroundings in a surreal manner. U.N security guards stand ready at its outermost wall. "Looks like fun time is over. You ready?"
"Of course." She smiles, pulling her purse a little higher on her shoulder. I wish there was another way to do this.
"I.D Please." The first guard asks, I hand them my clearance card, Mari does the same. The men look at the Checkmate forged ID's. It was Sasha's idea; wanted to try and keep us off the radar for as long as possible.
"Go head, we'll tell them you're on your way." The guards hand us back our IDs as the gate opens. They don't even bother to search us. The outer garden between the Dome and the gate glistens, some of the plants I'm sure are not indigenous to this region. Must have cost of fortune to bring them here and keep them alive.
"Well there's a face I never thought I would be seeing again." As Mari and I walk into the Headquarters of the Global Guardian's we're greeted by a golden robot about three feet tall.
"L'Ron." Looks like our cover is blown. "I thought you took off for greener pastors years ago."
"Well I did but you know Max." He emotes; putting his hands on what would be his thighs. "Needed my expertise after he obtained the charter from the United Nations."
"So you still getting him his coffee then?"
"Ever the quick wit. As the head of staff here at The Dome how can I help you and your lovely assistant?" He grabs Mari's hand putting his head to it; I think he thinks he has a shot with her.
"Who's your flattering friend Ted?" She asks pulling her hand away, she's trying not to laugh and doing a better job at it then I am.
"L'Ron this is Mari, she's...."
"The lovely and animalistic Vixen." He interrupts me. He was always using the Justice League Embassy's to study up on former and current members. "Her exploits both in and out of costume are well known."
"Is Booster here, I kinda need to talk to him?" I change the subject to something less unsettling then L'Ron trying to flirt with Mari.
"Actually, Mr. Gold arrived back a short while ago. I can show you to his quarters if you'd like." L'Ron's metallic feet ring with a dull thud against the marble floor.
The Dome is a more of a piece of art then a base, nothing like the Watchtower or even the old Embassy. I can see a tour guide showing it off to a group of tourists. In the center I see two men sparring. From the looks of their costumes I'm guessing they're from South America. One wears the colors of the Brazilian flag, the other Peru. Max has been really expanding this team from when I saw the footage of their first encounter with an OMAC.
"Here we are." L'Ron buzzes the door which slides open, Skeet’s hovering in the door way. "Skeets."
"L'Ron." I swear the two are glaring at each other. They don't exchange any other words as L'Ron walks away to resume his duties, whatever those maybe. "Mr. Kord, what a pleasant surprise, please come in."
I walk into the suite, Mari follows, the door shutting behind us, the room is large and extravagant. Ever the master of subtly.
"Skeets if it’s another groupie tell them I'll meet them down at the bar in fifteen minutes. Making them wait..." Booster yells as he walks out of the bathroom, a towel around his neck.
"Does what exactly?" Mari asks, clearly not happy with Booster's thought process.
"You know fans." He smiles at her; I think he may be an idiot savant, to have made it this far it's the only possible explanation. "So Ted what brings you here, I thought you were..."
"Dead. Yeah, long story." I walk around the room picking up something that looks like it was purchased through Sky Mall. In fact most of the decor in this place looks like it came straight from that publication. "I need to talk to you and Skeets about something actually; I'm working on a case."
"For the Bat?" Booster asks, when I left Chicago to help in Gotham I left Booster as the cities champion. Things could have gone worse I suppose.
"No, something else." I try to be cryptic in my wording. I don't want to believe he has anything to do with the OMACs but... "Mari could you..."
She nods as she takes a small cell phone shaped object out of her purse. She places it on the black metallic table that sits in front of the matching black leather sofa. I watch as Skeets shakes a little as the electromagnetic distortion field expands. I figured he'd be able to withstand it, unlike any bugs that might be planted.
"What was that?" Booster's muscles tense a little. Mari makes her moves quick slamming him up against the nearest wall. I'm sure she can sense things happening that I can't. I trust her more then Booster at this point.
"What do you know about the OMAC's? I need you to tell me everything." My voice sounds like it drops three octaves.
"I know what you know; they're out to get people. We just stop them isn't that right Skeets?" Booster tries to pry Mari's hands off of his throat. I really hate this part but I'm not sure there is any other way, at least that's what I keep telling myself to keep from vomiting.
"He is correct Mr. Kord, all of our records from this time have proven difficult to decipher, as you know. The OMAC's appear many times in the documents I have access to but very little is actually written about their motives." Skeets tells me everything I need to know, or at least everything I want to hear.
"What do you know about temporal distortion fields?" I press my luck looking at Skeets who floats silently.
"The power needed to generate and focus one would need to be immense, the field is more of a sphere encapsulating a portion of space and aligning at a different angle then regular reality. They are a hypothetical at best and a farce at worst." Again I'm not sure if he's lying or telling the truth.
"Can you generate one? Or could you if you had the right equipment?" I ask.
"Of course he couldn't." Booster chimes in; Mari lifts him higher against the wall. The room shakes as an explosion rocks the buildings foundations. The lights dim as the facility goes into lock down.
"Put him down Mari." I tell her, knowing she'll do it. "Something's wrong."
"Yeah you come in here and play Maxwell Smart and then..." Booster starts as another explosion jolts the room.
"I'll fill you in on everything later." I walk towards the door opening it slightly. The lobby below is engulfed in flame, although I don't hear any screams. "You better get your suit on."
"I don't smell any blood." Vixen sniffs the air. "This isn't right."
"Skeets..." I turn around to see the golden android floating over Booster's unconscious body. Well that answers one question.
