Anger, something that I usually don't let get the better of me, but this time things are different. I look at the man responsible for killing me; and I lose it. My senses become blurred as I lunge towards him; I want to wipe that smug sneer off of his face. I'm not sure how long we fight for or even if there is a clear winner. When the bullet flies in between us I stop. I know a warning shot when I see one.
"That's enough." I look around, at the new faces that have joined our battle. Deadshot sits hunched on a pile of broken concrete, the barrel of his gun pointed at me while he looks at his true target in the distance. At the base of the rubble stands the man who had barked out the order. Rick Flagg. He's one of Waller's from the old days, back when I was just starting out. Man, that really ages me. Mari walks over to help me up. She stands by my side in a defensive position ready to help me if I say so. She's loyal, someone I can trust; something that is becoming more of a necessity.
"What do you want Flagg?" I ask, my mind becoming clearer as the anger subsides.
"Doesn't matter what I want." He replies watching as Dr. Alchemy gets to his feet. Crimson energy, the result of him absorbing the Philosopher’s Stone swirls around his body. "We have order's to help you take this thing out."
"And where did those orders come from?" Vixen shouts.
"Guess." Flagg motions for Deadshot to go. He scrambles off of the rubble and into the desolate remains of the city. Most likely to take up a sniping position somewhere.
"I couldn't do enough. There is something, I....." J'onn floats behind us; he has a look of pain on his face that I've seen only a few times.
"Not helpful Manhunter." Flagg walks towards him clearly not intimidated by the Martian's presence.
"The people around, I couldn't help them. I couldn't save them..." J'onn drops to the ground holding his head. I look around, the people still in place. I've seen J'onn move mountains, he's right something else is going on here besides just a psychic force.
"Looks like you're up Doctor." Flagg turns towards Alchemy who nods methodically as Vixen and I make sure J'onn is OK. In a swift motion Alchemy slams his arm into the ground, energy flowing out from his body and into the earth, I watch as the people who stand frozen disappear. I can see the beads of sweet slide down Alchemy's face; whatever he did must have taken a lot out of him.
"Done. I'll be sitting the rest of this one out if you need me." He uses his hand; it looks like a piece of jerky stained with charcoal, to wipe away the blood that had pooled at the side of his mouth. I must have knocked out a tooth. A part of me wishes it had been more.
"Lawson- take the shot." Flagg speaks into this Comm. My eyes search the remains of the city to see where Deadshot has taken position. I see a shadow in the distance and can only assume that it's him. Whatever he fires hits the OMAC with a dull thud; I wait for something to happen but nothing does.
"Think of this plan all on your own?" I question, watching as the OMAC fires plasma burst in the direction that the bullet had come from. I see the shorts, the currents of electricity flowing over its body as it powers up. The bullet must have been a magnet, but that would only cause it to be isolated to...
"You know what to do Kord. We'll watch things from back here; make it stays contained if you can't stop it." For a second I think that Flagg actually might be one of the few people who respect me. "Just remember Waller wants this one the opposite of brain dead."
"Let's go." I smile back at him, guess I was wrong about the whole respect thing. Vixen follows me with J'onn close behind, he's got a slight limp, no wonder he's been flying so much lately.
"Ted what's going one and who are those guys?" She asks, as the OMAC fires a beam of energy into the sky. It's getting more erratic.
"They're the Suicide Squad, Waller's errand boys." I reply back, I should have known she'd try something like this. "The bullet Deadshot fired, wasn't a bullet, it was shell filled with electromagnets. It hit the OMAC's armor and is currently causing shorts all over it, too many for it to isolate one at a time to fix."
"That's a pretty good plan." She looks over at me. "You thought of it didn't you?"
"Yeah. It came to me while studying the body of the last one, it's only going to work this once though, was hoping there'd be another way." OMAC's constantly adapt so each move only works once; if you're lucky. Mr. Terrific helped me think of this one, and a whole list of others, I'm not sure how Waller got a hold of it.
"There are more?" J'onn speaks for the first time since we started our walk towards the OMAC.
"There are now, this is, was, the first though. When we get back to the Castle I'll bring you up to speed. This is the one that you've been tracking..." I pause, and leave out the part how this one has been my responsibility.
"Vixen I need you to channel some of that electricity away. J'onn, how are you feeling?" I ask, already knowing what he is going to say.
"I'm going to need you to cut the psychic connection to whatever is giving that thing orders. Or create enough interference that it will look like a jam. I'll give you guys a nice neat distraction." I dash towards the OMAC hoping that it's been too focused on the shorts to worry about us.
"Hey big guy! I'm Spider-Man!" I shout, it's enough to get his attention, I can feel my cheeks get red with embarrassment. Not my finest banter. The OMAC turns its attention towards me and fires from its eye. Thing is getting desperate, using the big guns on little old me. In a sick way I'm kinda flattered. I roll out of the way but not quickly enough, the beam grazes my thigh. It burns like hell.
"Least there is no blood. Vixen, J'onn now!" I give the orders, Vixen leaps towards it like a gazelle or a deer, I can't be for sure. Her hands dig into the OMAC's armor as she gets a firm hold. She channels what I think is an Electric Eel with little effort allowing J’onn to make his move, I watch as he concentrates a thin dribble of blood seeps from his nose. If this isn't enough, if this doesn't work, I just signed the lives of my two friends away.
"This isn't going to last much longer. Thing is already starting to beat the magnets." I turn taken off guard by the voice. Deadshot stands a few paces away, a large portion of his uniform brunt off. "If they can't do it."
"They will." I lie, in hope, in desperation of this getting better and working. Deadshot nods, dropping the cigarette that had been in his mouth onto the ground and raises his rifle. I'm a terrible liar. I turn my attention back to the OMAC, I watch as it falls to the ground, the armor covering its body dissolving. Vixen stands by J'onn smoke rising off of the both of them.
"Hell yeah." Vixen smiles looking at the body underneath the shell. I'm not sure what I was expecting but I know this wasn't it. He's no more then 18, 20 at the most. His body has a few tattoos, long shaggy hair covers most of his face. He's lower body is covered by a pair of tattered jeans, while his upper is bare. I can see the track marks on his arm, like this kid didn't have it bad enough just living on the streets.
"Target is secured." Flagg speaks into his ear piece. Alchemy stands next to him. "Bring in Beta team to secure the rest of the area and prepare subject for transport."
"You can't take him away just like that. He's hurt..." Vixen voice is full of compassion, it takes me a little off guard, considering a few minutes ago she was more then happy to rip into this thing.
"He'll get the help he needs. Waller wants this one taken to Belle Rave. Doesn't want the Castle to be compromised." Flagg is right, even though I don't want to admit it. Taking this thing back to the Castle even in its current state would be a huge mistake. Although to let Waller have all of its power might be a bigger one. "If you have a problem with it, I'd suggest you take it up with her."
"Plus you kinda owe us for saving your asses." Deadshot chimes in, lighting another cigarette. He waves the flame of the lighter in front of J'onn's face.
"What about the townspeople?" J'onn isn't amused as he turns towards Flagg.
"Safe house. Alchemy transported them to a Checkmate warehouse. So your techs can fix this. Whatever was causing the psychic interference also prevented us from Boom Tubing in and Boom Tubing them out. Hence the jet." Flagg points up at the hovering aircraft. The limp body rises from the ground as Alchemy wraps a force field around; the magic that he commands should be enough to hold it...him. They disappear as quickly as they had come.
"How are you feeling J'onn?" I look over at him as he stares into the now starlight sky.
"We have much to discuss Theodore." From the concern in his voice, this can't be good.
